The Vanarama National League SOUTH 2025/26 Preview

This is my 6th season of doing this and each season the preview tends to get a bit more traction so thank you to everybody who kindly reads and shares. I hope this year's version lives up to the same comprehensive detail from previous years.

I expect that my predictions may vary in comparison to you, the reader, such is the open nature of the league this year. Regardless though as to whether your final thoughts differ or not, the main objective of this preview is to help inform on the twenty four teams in the division. If I've done that, then hopefully you enjoy the read! Please spread the word as foot traffic and sharing is my only form of marketing for this preview.

Squad brief: Lightning did not strike twice for AFC Totton in the Southern League Premier play off final as they managed to overcome Gloucester City to take their place in the National League South for the first time in their history. Manager Jimmy Ball has kept faith with the bulk of the squad that achieved this historic feat with a handful of new signings adding competition for places. In particular, the manager has looked to bolster his defence with the signings of Tyler Cordner, Brandon Haunstrup and Christos Batzelis. Former National League defenders Cordner and Haunstrup will provide competition to the physical, experienced centre back duo of Sam Magri and Joe Oastler, whilst 20-year-old Batzelis will likely take up the left back spot. Recent signing Ryan Jackson, formerly of Sutton, may well complete the back four marshalled by number one goalkeeper Ryan Gosney.

Meanwhile, the Totton midfield is one area that has undergone changes over the summer with the departures of experienced Adam Tomasso and Roddy Collins whilst star man Ethan Taylor, with 80 goals from the past four seasons, also left despite two improved contract offers. Club captain Mike Carter remains and he may well be partnered in central midfield by Lee Hodson - signed from Eastleigh this summer - or potentially Ash Clarke, who returns on loan for a third time. Within the front four, one would imagine former Ebbsfleet man Craig Tanner will retain his spot on the left after impressing during last season's run in, especially after Tom Blair's surprise departure, although loanee Ralph Vigrass will be strongly competing for that spot. On the other flank, Christie Ward, who has joined permanently from Wycombe Wanderers, is no stranger to the National League South after previous loan spells at Tonbridge and Weymouth.

As for the strikers, 38-year-old Scott Rendall will no doubt play his part after still managing 17 goals last season and surprise signing Jay Emmanuel-Thomas will likely possess moments of magic over the course of the campaign. However, it is likely that Malachi Linton, fresh from an eight goal season at this level with Weymouth, and Totton's top scorer from last season - Tony Lee - will receive more game time as the Stags look to maintain their step two status.

Manager: Son of former 1966 World Cup winner Alan Ball, Jimmy Ball has been at the helm of AFC Totton for just over two seasons now. After various coaching spells at different academies, Ball received his first opportunity at Forest Green Rovers in 2021 following the sacking of Mark Cooper. Stepping up temporarily from the U18 side, Ball led Rovers into the League Two play offs which they exited in the semi finals after a narrow 5-4 aggregate defeat to Newport County. Ball was not made permanent manager and left the club shortly afterwards before taking up the AFC Totton job in March 2022. Shortly after, AFC Totton were crowned Southern League Division One champions and gained promotion to step three. The 2023/24 season saw AFC Totton finish 2nd in the Southern League but a heartbreaking penalty shoot out defeat to Salisbury City in the play off final halted a second successive promotion. Nevertheless, the 49-year-old was not to be denied again last season with promotion secured following victory over Gloucester City in the most recent play off final ensuring Ball will manage his first season at step two level in the National League South.

MVP: Brandon Haunstrup

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Malachi Linton

Overall Thoughts: It has been a meteoric rise for AFC Totton with two promotions in three seasons, but this next challenge may well be their toughest yet. In a division which looks uncompromisingly difficult, the club are inevitably going to be grouped with a dozen or so sides keeping one eye over their shoulder. To begin with, the loss of Tom Blair and Ethan Taylor are big blows for the team. Blair, formerly of Dorking, had a glutton of assists and possessed a knack of creating something from nothing whilst Taylor's sideways move to Gosport Borough is a real surprise considering his age and prolificacy at step three level. Summer signings look appropriate for the level but there does seem to be a lack of proven step two goalscorers in the squad. With current resources, the likes of Craig Tanner and Christie Ward are going to have to chip in from midfield to take the burden off Scott Rendall, Jay-Emmanuel Thomas, Tony Lee and Malachi Linton - who has never scored double digits in a season. After being well-backed in recent seasons, Jimmy Ball will have to be astute in the market throughout the campaign - exploring the options of talented young players from around the south west area to bolster his side when required during the campaign.

Prediction: AFC Totton have recruited smartly this summer, bringing in players with a variation of experience at step one and two. With the capacity to strengthen if needed throughout the season, it is hard to see the Stags falling into trouble and a season of consolidation looks to be on the cards.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: Once again last season, Chippenham defied the expectations of many by producing yet another comfortable mid-table finish with an array of young talent at their disposal. Going into this season, the Bluebirds have managed to keep many of their young stars including goalkeeper Will Henry who won the Supporters Player of the Season most recently. Manager's and Player's Player of the season Luke Haines will lead a central defence that could possibly consist of left-sided Freddie Grant and a 19-year-old full of promise in Jac Poffley. Nathaniel Williams is another option as is new signing Canice Carroll - a player who not long ago was plying his trade in the division above. At wing back, another new signing in Ethan Vaughan will likely replace the departed Tyreke Johnson down the left whereas Alex Bray's recent knee surgery means Lewis Colwell could well regain his position down the right after a loan spell at Basingstoke last season.

Elsewhere, the departure of Luke Spokes to Kidderminster Harriers and Joe Andrews loan from Peterborough having expired has seen manager Gary Horgan bring in the experienced Reece Fleet to bolster the central midfield ranks. The 33-year-old could well play alongside Tom Mehew or perhaps Jake Evans who completed an impressive loan spell at Gloucester City last season. Just in front will likely be Caine Bradbury - a creative player who many have touted for a move higher up the pyramid - although recently signed Quevin Castro, formerly of York, could well provide competition in that area.

Up front, last season's top goalscorer Harry Parsons looks set to lead the line again but with Matt McClure departing, Horgan has been active over the summer to replenish his attack lines. Firstly 21-year-old Ezio Touray, who managed 17 goals in 55 games at Weymouth and then a further 12 at Poole Town last season, could prove to be a real coup for the club. Also former Torquay striker Olaf Koszela, fresh from scoring 28 goals at step three level last season, has also joined to give Chippenham a much more prolific look about them.

Manager: Ready to begin a 9th consecutive campaign in the National League South, Chippenham Town will be led by Gary Horgan for the 4th season in a row. Horgan, initially a player for the club, took over for the club's final six games of 2021/22 and subsequently helped the outsiders qualify for the National League South play offs. A quarter final victory over Dorking followed before a close semi final defeat to Ebbsfleet after extra time. Since then, Horgan has helped stabilise the Bluebirds into a consistent mid-table National League South side with finishes of 13th, 12th and 14th across the last three seasons. Alongside this, perhaps Horgan's most notorious achievement to date, the side caused an FA Cup first round 'cupset' against League One Lincoln Town in 2022 before bowing out to Burton Albion in round two. With a much smaller budget than many others at this level, Horgan will hope to defy the odds once again this coming season.

MVP: Luke Haines

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Olaf Koszela

Overall Thoughts: Gary Horgan has done a superb job with one of the smallest budgets at this level since taking over from Mike Cook. Year after year, Chippenham manage to compete by bringing through, buying and loaning young talents with a pathway to playing at a higher level. The Bluebirds once again look to have signed effectively by strengthening their core with Canice Carroll and Reece Fleet in particular bringing much needed knowhow to the side. Admittingly, Chippenham have not been particularly high scorers in recent years, yet the signings of Ezio Touray and Olaf Koszela could well take the burden off of poacher Harry Parsons. One area the side will have to improve upon this season is their home form as twelve defeats was the joint highest amongst the division in 2024/25. All in all, it would be a tremendous achievement for Chippenham to replicate their mid-table finishes with the calibre of side they are largely up against this season. My instinct is that this could well be a tougher season for the Bluebirds, however I would back Gary Horgan to preserve the club's step two status for another year.

Prediction: Chippenham do not have the financial muscle to compete with the bigger boys of the division. However, this young, talented squad should have enough to finish clear of the drop zone.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: After a torrid few years, Dover finally had something to cheer at the back end of last season as promotion to the National League South was gained. Even manager Jake Leberl queried if the Whites' rise was a season too early but the 48-year-old has set about preparing for the challenge that lies ahead. Experienced goalkeeper Mitch Walker will provide some much needed knowhow of this division behind what is likely to be a back three. Last season's regular trio in Joe Tennent, Luca Cocoracchio and Jacob Mensah will have to be at their best to keep out new signings Jalen Jones and Harry Beadle - the former being a six foot seven centre back who performed well at Oxford City last season and the latter who made thirty-six appearances as Aveley were relegated from the National League South. The dynamic Fuad Sesay will most likely continue to stride up and down the left wing whilst Roman Charles Cook will aim to do likewise on the opposite flank.

One key figure to put pen to paper is Ryan Hanson, who impressed on loan during last season's run in. The former Torquay and Tonbridge man brings step two experience to the base of Dover's midfield behind two goalscoring midfielders: Luke Baptiste and Alfie Matthews. Baptiste, the Whites Supporters' Player of the Season, scored 21 goals in all competitions from midfield whilst attacking midfield partner Matthews managed 13 league goals of his own. Young but experienced George Wilkinson, who has been with the club since the age of eighteen, and new signing Momodou Jallow will add competition in this area.

Reinforcements have also been brought in up front with Decarrey Sheriff and Kenny Coker both joining from step three sides yet with a range of step two experiences between them. However, it will take some effort to dislodge Manager and Players' Player of the Season Ruben Soares-Junior and 25 goal George Nikaj who helped to ensure Dover were joint top goalscorers in the Isthmian League Premier during the previous campaign

Manager: Following a playing and coaching career largely associated with Dover Athletic, Jake Leberl was appointed to manage the club for the first time in December 2023. The 48-year-old's first prominent coaching role came in 2011 with Margate and lasted for two years until taking the Assistant Manager post at Dover under Chris Kinnear. The duo collaborated for five years and brought some of the club's best moments in modern memory with promotion to the National League and three top ten finishes in a row. Ultimately, Kinnear's departure in 2018 also saw Leberl leave with him and it would take another five years for him to return to the club - this time as Mitch Brundle's number two. Nevertheless, Dover were in freefall and when Leberl took the job shortly after the former's sacking, there was little hope of saving the club from relegation to the Isthmian league. Yet, the 2024/25 campaign was an unexpected success, despite financial issues, with Dover finishing 5th and qualifying for the end of season play offs. An unexpected 2-1 victory away to favourites Billericay in the semi-finals was followed by a 2-0 victory over Dartford in the final. Despite Leberl jovially suggesting promotion 'was a nightmare as the club were no way ready for it', the Whites manager will be aiming to solidify the club as a step two regular for seasons to come.

MVP: Ryan Hanson

Top Goalscorer Prediction: George Nikaj

Overall Thoughts: Despite an joyous promotion, Dover's second half of last season form does bring some concerns. At the half-way stage, the Whites' sat five points clear at the top with 54 goals scored. Another twenty one games later, and Jake Leberl's men found themselves in 5th place with only another 29 goals added. After many seasons of being on a downward spiral, it would not have been a surprise had the club faded out of the play off picture entirely but Dover regained their winning feeling just in time with seven of the last nine matches won. With a very young squad, it has allowed the club to retain many of these young talents who would surely have moved up to step two football had the Whites failed to promote. For this reason, Dover look an exciting proposition. There are gems in Leberl's squad who will likely excel and put themselves in the shop window whilst simultaneously propelling the club to key points in their mission to survive. It will certainly be a step up in calibre for Dover this season, but with upward momentum, players with potential and a very savvy manager, they may just surprise a few.

Prediction: Although they are likely viewed as underdogs in the eyes of many, there are enough upsides to Jake Leberl's side to give them a real chance of survival. It could well go to the wire.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: At the beginning of December 2024, Enfield Town were rooted to the bottom of the division with 11 points from 19 games. An immediate return to step three looked inevitable but fast forward 27 matches later and the Towners had acquired another 37 points and confirmed another season in the National League South. Manager Gavin Macpherson has made subtle changes to his squad with attacking talents Lennon Peake and Anointed Chukwu moving to clubs expected to challenge for promotion. However, Macpherson will be delighted to have kept the core of his defence with the invaluable experience of Adam Thompson and the youthful excellence of Henry Hawkins and Xavier Benjamin rounding off the likely back three marshalled by Rhys Forster, who looks as if he will regain his spot in the first team following Joe Wright's departure to Aveley. With their usual 3-5-2 formation, Billy Leonard found himself as the right wing back often last season but may find his spot challenge by Avan Jones who has joined from divisional rivals Chesham. On the opposite side, experienced versatile ex-Chelmsford man Ruaridh Donaldson is likely to get the nod and will add key experience to an Enfield side looking to beat the drop for successive years.

The central midfield area will likely see mid-season signing Bayley Brown continuing to anchor the side and he may be joined by club captain Mickey Parcell, who can also drop into defence if required. An alternative is 18-year-old Hayden Bullas, signed on loan from Leyton Orient and billed as a player with a bright future after making 27 appearances for Dartford last season as they reached the Isthmian league Play Offs. One man who will no doubt retain his spot as the most advanced midfielder is Sam Youngs who struck an extraordinary 17 times for the relegation threatened side during the previous campaign. However, he will play behind a new strikeforce this season as the Towners have recruited Tommy Wood and Lamar Reynolds from Hornchurch and Greenock Morton respectively.

Manager: With survival superbly secured after some testing results, Gavin Macpherson will look to complete another underdog story again this season with Enfield Town. A fairly nomadic playing career saw spells at Carlisle, Barnet, Woking, Wealdstone and Slough Town before putting down roots at the Met Police FC. After spending twenty years as a playing and coach at the club, Macpherson was handed the keys to the first team in 2018 and led the club shortly afterwards into an FA Cup first round tie against Newport County. The achievements continued in 2019 as Met Police won the Southern League Premier South play offs but lost out on promotion to Tonbridge Angels in a super play off. The play offs were reached once again in 2022 but Macpherson departed in 2023 just prior to the club voluntarily taking relegation to step four. Shortly afterwards, the 46-year-old was appointed as Enfield Town manager and led the club to a 3rd place finish in the Isthmian League Premier Division. The subsequent play-off campaign saw a semi-final victory over Wingate & Finchley before an impressive 3-0 triumph in the final over Chatham Town. In only their 23rd year of existence as a fan-owned club, Enfield were vast underdogs to stay up but defied the odds to finish 19th, above the relegation zone by three points, and secure their stay in the National League South for a second season.

MVP: Adam Thompson

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Sam Youngs

Overall Thoughts: It should not be underestimated what a superb achievement it was for Enfield Town to avoid relegation last season. On a very small budget for this division, Gavin Macpherson beat the odds as he has done many times already in his managerial career. However, the dreaded second season is upon the Towners and the mission to survive will be even tougher than last season with the ever-growing strength of the division. With only 49 goals scored in their debut campaign, Enfield need their front two to fire more than last year although Tommy Wood and Lamar Reynolds are historically not the most prolific of forwards. The onus may fall on Sam Youngs again to hit double figures from an advanced midfield role. Defensively, the side were much improved after Christmas with five clean sheets and far more competitive scorelines and Macpherson will hope that keeping the core of his defence and midfield will help the team continue in this vein. Realistically, like the season just gone, Enfield are going to be in their own personal battle with six or seven other teams and coming out on top of this mini-league will be the key to their survival hopes.

Prediction: To stay up again would be a remarkable achievement for Enfield Town. They won't go without a fight but it is hard to see with the current firepower how the team will score enough goals to survive. Relegation.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: All change at Hampton & Richmond following a worrying end to last season which saw fifteen defeats in the club's final seventeen games. The number of renewals can be counted on one hand as manager Alan Julian has put an entirely new squad together in a bid to push Borough up the league. Former Aveley goalkeeper James Holden has signed after the Essex based side were relegated and will likely take the gloves ahead of young shot stopper Luka Ziger. At the back, 36-year-old Alan Massey will provide a wealth of experience and will likely be partnered by Poole Town regular Harry Thomas. Paul Field and Jude Mason, both key members of their step three sides last season, will likely complete Julian's new look defence.

Into midfield and the club have potentially landed a real coup in former Woking midfielder Rohan Ince. The 32-year-old has not featured much over the past two years but on his day was one of the standout holding midfielders in non-league football. Vying for a spot alongside him in the Borough midfield will be the energetic Eddie Allsopp who is equally strong with both feet or the returning Sam Deadfield who was Manager's Player of the Season in his most recent spell with the club.

Further ahead, there are a host of options who could play just behind the front line. Ronan Silva has been acquired from Salisbury after scoring eight goals last season whilst Harry Gardner will be looking to build off the promising seven games he played after signing for the club in March. Elsewhere, Stan Flaherty could be one to watch after jumping up two divisions from Kingstonian and Ibrahim Jalloh adds the option of pace and dynamism to the flanks. Also the signing of Davide Rodari, fresh from over 60 goals in two seasons at Hastings United, could be a useful source of goals from the wide areas. Up front, despite his injury problems of recent years, Julian could deploy former Dagenham & Redbridge and Woking striker Reece Grego-Cox. Alternatively, the manager could opt for 25-year-old striker Craig Fasanmade who has played in over 170 games at National League South level.

Manager: With a playing career of over 20 years, Alan Julian is synonymous with non-league football. Starting out with Brentford in 2002, it was at Stevenage that Julian made his name with 141 appearances over three years at the club. Fine performances across that spell saw him reunite with his former manager Mark Stimson at Gillingham in 2008. It was here that Julian saw himself as a regular in League One and Two before dropping back down to the National League across several spells with Newport, Dartford and Sutton. A three season spell with Bromley followed before the twilight of his career saw him signed as Billericay's number one goalkeeper before joining Hampton & Richmond in 2020. It was here that Julian called time on his playing career in 2024, aged 41, after four years at the club. Nevertheless, just two months after announcing his plans to stop playing, Julian was appointed as manager of the club following the board's decision to dispense with Mel Gwinnett after leading the side to a 9th place finish. Despite a low budget, Borough were on the fringes of the play off positions around the half-way mark but faded during the run in to eventually finish in 19th position. With a lower budget than most, the manager will be hoping to reverse the worrying trend that set in towards the end of last season.

MVP: Alan Massey

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Davide Rodari

Overall Thoughts: An entirely new squad always brings about the unknown for the season ahead: will the new group of players flourish and exceed expectations or will the blend fail leading to a season of struggle? What is clear is that despite their struggles towards the back end of last season, Hampton & Richmond have lost some talented players in the likes of Mauro Vilhete, Archy Taylor, Dom Revan and Josh Keeya to name a few. The experienced replacements in Massey, Ince and Grego-Cox certainly bring a wealth of National League pedigree in with them. But Massey - a true professional - aside, questions have to raised over the motivation of Ince and Grego-Cox after not so positive reports from their former clubs. It also has to be queried how many games the three of them are going to manage over a long season. The majority of other signings are mostly from step three clubs and, although most had very good seasons with their former sides, to bank on a large percentage moving upwards and instantly succeeding is risky to say the least. Alan Julian is under pressure to get off to a fast start after the struggles towards the back end of last season and a tough looking opening seven games could put this Borough side on the backfoot straight away.

Prediction: There is normally always an unexpected relegated side: last season it was St Albans. Despite ten seasons in the National League South, Hampton & Richmond's summer business does not quite meet the mark in my eyes. Relegated.

Squad brief: Why change a winning formula? Dominic di Paola certainly hasn't felt the need to drastically alter his squad following last season's historic promotion to the National League South. The manager, now ten years into his reign, has made subtle tweaks around the edges of his forward line as the Horsham prepare for life at step two level. However, much of the personnel remains the same beginning with experienced goalkeeper Lewis Carey. In front of the 32-year-old shot stopper is the reliable duo of Danny Barker, who has previously played at this level with Worthing, and Jack Strange. Full backs in this 4-2-3-1 formation see Harvey Sparks marauding down the left whilst Isaac Philpot and Jack Elliott compete for the right back position.

In the centre of midfield, James Hammond has a wealth of National League South experience with Eastbourne and will likely be on penalty duty. His partner Charlie Hester-Cook has been a stand out step three performer for some time and it will be interesting to see if he can make the jump up a tier. Last season's regular trio behind the striker were a key part of the side's success. On 272 appearances for the club, right sided Lee Harding will test his ability at step two level for the first time but will receive competition from new signing James Roberts, who scored 11 goals for Hampton & Richmond from a similar position. Di Paola has also brought in left winger Leone Gravata on loan from York City but he will have to force his way past Lucas Rodrigues or Club Player of the Season Reece Myles-Meekums who ended last season on fifteen goals.

Up front, with Chris Dickson's departure and Shamir Fenelon not normally a first choice option, the Hornets have brought in three new strikers to provide competition for Ola Ogunwamide. First, Greg Luer returns after a short stint with the club last season whilst 24-year-old Gianluca Botti is one to watch after four goals in a short loan spell with Tonbridge last season after scoring heavily in step three previously with Lewes. Also, Di Paola has signed the experienced Rhys Murphy after his departure from Dorking and the 34-year-old could well be a useful option late on in games.

Manager: It has been a decade of delight for Horsham manager Dominic di Paola. Taking over as a 34-year-old in 2015, Horsham had just been relegated to step five - the Southern Combination Football League. Di Paola guided the club back to the Isthmian League Division One South East at the first time of asking and followed this up with survival the following season. Still at a temporary home waiting for the construction of their new ground, the Hornets gained a second promotion under Di Paola's stewardship by finishing as runners up in 2018/19 and triumphing in the subsequent play offs. Promotion to the Isthmian Premier League, saw solid finishes for numerous seasons in a row but the main headlines were caused by the club's exploits in the FA Cup which saw Horsham reach the First Round proper three times in four seasons. In particular, a 3-3 draw with Barnsley was a notable highlight and despite losing the replay, Di Paola's men were reinstated into the competition after Barnsley fielded an ineligible player. The subsequent 2nd round tie against Sutton resulted in a 3-0 defeat but acted as a catalyst for the team to finish 5th in the league that season and reach the play offs. Although promotion was not gained on that occasion, the following 2024/25 campaign saw Horsham gain promotion to the National League South for the first time in their history following an unbelievable final day where Billericay Town were overtaken on goal difference after Di Paola's side won 5-1 over Hashtag United.

MVP: Reece Myles-Meekums

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Gianluca Botti

Overall Thoughts: On the rise for many years, Horsham's time as a step two club has been a number of seasons in the making. With a decade of success at the club, Dominic Di Paola will be confident of overcoming this latest hurdle in the club's rise. With the best defensive record in the Isthmian Premier League last season, the manager will be confident in the unit that have got the club to where they are today. Alongside this, the club were also one of the highest scorers in the division yet it was wisely decided that a variety of forward options with recent experience at National League South level was required. Nevertheless, Di Paola will be operating with a slightly smaller squad this season due to budget restrictions, which means the manager will have to use the loan market wisely where possible like he has done with the acquisition of Leone Gravata for the season. Although the step up in overall quality this season will likely expose Horsham at times, the tight knit nature of the group will serve the Hornets well in the difficult moments to come.

Prediction: Di Paola's side will have to toil at times in this incredibly tough division. But, with the core of a successful squad retained and strong reinforcements in the attacking areas, there is a real opportunity for Horsham to beat the odds. Survival.

Squad brief: After numerous seasons of finding stability at National League South level, manager Jay Saunders announced he was leaving Tonbridge Angels back in March. With ample time to choose a successor, the club settled on Lewes manager Craig Nelson who has immediately looked to put his own stamp on the Angels squad. In the process, some prominent players have departed with Sutton swooping for wide men Mo Dabre and Liam Vincent whilst Ebbsfleet have recruited dominant centre backs Jamie Fielding and Ronny Nelson. With no permanent goalkeeper on the books, Nelson has started by signing Wealdstone's back up goalkeeper Jacob Adams. It looks as if Adams will play behind a back four this season with new signing Arthur Penney from Chelmsford joined at centre back by either Nazir Bakrin or young Wycombe loanee Jack Matton. Left back looks to be taken by Bailey Akehurst whilst the right back position appears to be a straight fight between ex-Chelmsford defender Bradley Williams and former Lewes man Marcel McIntosh.

Speaking of Lewes, Nelson has returned to his former club no less than five times to sign former players this summer. Alfie Allen and Matty Warren are two of these and both are trusted by Nelson to make the step up to the Angels' central midfield. However, former captain Jordan Higgs has returned following an injury disrupted season at play off finalists Maidstone. The 28-year-old will hope to regain his midfield slot alongside experienced former Charlton midfielder Scott Wagstaff. Further ahead, the most eye catching acquisition from Lewes is that of former Bromley attacking midfielder Marcus Sablier, who was named the club's Supporters Player of the Year last season. Wide right of the 22-year-old could well be returning Wycombe loanee Brody Peart who impressed in his 11 appearances last season. On the left, Brandon Pierrick could well feature after an impressive 43 goals over the past two seasons for AFC Croydon. However, the experienced Sean Shields will hope to maintain the spot that he has made his own since joining two seasons ago.

In attack, Oluwabunmi Babajide has joined after making 20 appearances for Hampton & Richmond in the previous campaign. He will face competition for a starting spot from step three and four goal machine Eddie Simon who managed 73 goals in 199 games for Walton & Hersham before hitting 40 goals last season for step four Kingstonian.

Manager: Still a relative novice in the world of football management, Craig Nelson will make his debut as a National League South manager during the 2025/26 campaign. After a semi-professional career best known for his spell at Tooting & Mitcham, Nelson took his first managerial job in November 2022 at Glebe FC. After an initial 7th place finish, Nelson steered Glebe to the top of the Southern Counties East Premier division at step five level before stepping down with a handful of games to go in 2024 to take charge at Lewes. The Rooks did not lose a game until the end of September after a fantastic start although this early form did eventually fade away into a 13th place finish in the Isthmian Premier League. Nevertheless, the entertaining brand of football played persuaded the Angels to appoint Nelson this summer following Jay Saunders decision to step down towards the end of last season.

MVP: Jordan Higgs

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Sean Shields

Overall Thoughts: It has been a summer of change at Tonbridge Angels. Jay Saunders had solidified the club as a frequent mid-table side albeit with a slight decline in position year-on-year. Craig Nelson was an interesting choice as a replacement and one wonders if he was chosen due to the remit of putting together a squad on a small budget similar to what he did at Lewes last season. With the Rooks, Nelson started superbly winning the opening five games of the season but there was a large fall off and the club finished down in 13th position with only ten more victories that season. Will the step up be too big for the 37-year-old inexperienced manager? In terms of the squad, a fair few from that Lewes group have made the leap along with Nelson. Marcus Sablier looks the standout talent from the bunch but it remains to be seen if the other four are of step two quality. The Angels did lose some strong operators in the summer and recruitment to date does appear to be young loanees and cast offs from other step two sides. In a league that looks rather unforgiving this season, it remains to be seen if the Angels have enough divisional knowhow to steer clear of trouble.

Prediction: On paper, Tonbridge have not replaced their key departures sufficiently. Plus, there are question marks over whether the manager is quite ready for the tough challenge ahead. Relegation.

Squad brief: Bath City will certainly be happy that this summer is proving to be quieter than the last. Decimated of their core talent in Cody Cooke, Dan Hayfield and Jordan Dyer by Torquay, the Romans began the 2024/25 season in real relegation trouble - a far cry from their play off exploits the season before. Nevertheless, a solid second half of the season staved off any real trouble and manager Darren Way will be hoping to move the club back in the right direction this season. It has been much quieter on the signing front with continuity the aim. Supporters' Player of the Season Harvey Wiles-Richards looks set to continue in goal with a familiar back four of Joe Raynes, Danny Greenslade, Ollie Tomlinson and club captain Kieran Parselle in front of him.

The vast experience of Luke Russe and Jordan Tillson will patrol central midfield whilst Zac Smith will hope to push his way into the side after rupturing his ACL in the opening game of the previous season. Young right winger Ewan Clark will be hoping for an improvement in his output after failing to register a goal last season despite possessing real promise. On the other flank, Jordan Alves will be hoping to continue his sharp rise after a debut season in the National League South that heralded seven goals. One signing Way will be happy to get over the line is the permanent capture of Mitch Beardmore following a short but exciting spell on loan towards the end of last season. The 20-year-old will face competition for his position behind the striker though from another new signing in Will Jenkins-Davies, who showed real promise whilst on loan at league runners up Torquay United last season.

With Scott Wilson and Alex Fisher steady options to play as the lone striker at this level, Way has looked to add a more potent goal threat with the return of Brad Ash following 7 goals from 19 games on loan last season.

Manager: After a tricky start to the 2024/25 season, Bath City handed Darren Way his first managerial role in five years with the task of turning around the club's form and fortunes. Associated largely with Yeovil Town throughout his playing career, Way became one of the club coaches for five years before being handed the manager's post in 2015. A superb run, with two manager of the month awards, followed as Way steered the Glovers comfortably to League Two safety that season. A four year stint in charge saw the club consistently finish just above the relegation zone but eventually Way was sacked with the club on the verge of dropping into the National League. Coaching spells at Plymouth and Fleetwood followed before Way was appointed as Jerry Gill's successor in 2024 with Bath treading water in 20th place. An improvement in the 2nd half of the season eventually saw the Romans finish in 15th position - a sizeable 12 points above the relegation zone.

MVP: Kieran Parselle

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Brad Ash

Overall Thoughts: It would take a fool to write off Bath City with the Somerset side reaching the play offs three times in the past eight seasons. The club are notoriously good at finding unpolished gems and getting the most from them with many players moving upward from their time at the Romans. A solid core was at the heart of the side's survival last season with only 48 goals conceded - the joint 4th lowest in the league. Certainly, an experienced back four with the central midfield combination of Russe and Tillson possess invaluable knowhow at this level. It is within the front four where Bath City need to improve if they are to gatecrash the upper regions of the league. Last season's 47 goals were the third lowest total in the division with Jordan Alves, Ewan Clark and Mitch Beardmore not managing more than 10 goals between them, despite the high ceiling that their potential suggests. Nevertheless, another season wiser, plus with Brad Ash normally reliable for a double figure return in this division, may well see Bath as a dark horse for a play off spot if all of the components click into place.

Prediction: A comfortable season is a realistic aim but there is potential for higher if a young attacking unit blossoms. Mid table.

Squad brief: Following an impressive debut season in the National League South, Chesham United will aim to avoid the second season syndrome that has struck many-a-team before them. Signings look to be more akin to players with step two experience replacing some of their promoted side that have departed for pastures new. Experienced goalkeeper Brad Goode looks set to remain between the sticks behind a potential new back three combination. Centre back Alfie Young, who featured heavily for Worthing before he succumbed to injury last season, has joined alongside former Slough stalwart Dan Bayliss. Both will likely cement a place in the Generals' back three alongside club captain Callum Adebiyi although Steve Brown and Connor Stevens will provide healthy competition too. Supporters Player of the Season Alex Lafleur will likely continue to fly up and down the left flank with Connor Roberts and new signings Joshua Addae and Josh Dawodu in competition for the right wing back role after the departure of Avan Jones.

Joint managers James Duncan and Michael Murray have also looked to reinforce their midfield with the impressive capture of Alex Babos from Hereford. With the experienced Ryan Upward out for an extended period with a serious injury, former St Albans attack minded midfielder Giorgio Rasulo has also joined and will likely compete with Jack Connors and Lewis Rolfe for a starting spot. Further ahead, Zac Joseph and Samson Esan competed for the attacking midfield spot last season but will do well to hold off new signing Alfie Williams who joins after a decent first season in the NLS with Hampton & Richmond. Up front last time out, Nathan Minhas impressed with thirteen goals alongside strike partner Mitchell Weiss who managed eight of his own. Experienced striker Matt McClure will look to compliment the strikeforce after fading from the first team picture at Chippenham Town last season.

Manager: Double delight down at The Meadow as James Duncan and Michael Murray are set to embark on their 8th season in charge together at Chesham United. The duo originally joined from Potters Bar Town, who they had led into the Bostik Premier League, before departing in 2018. In just their second season in charge, Duncan and Murray had Chesham one point off top spot before the season was curtailed for COVID and only leaders Truro were promoted. The following campaign saw more disruptions before 2021/22 saw further heartbreak with the Generals missing out on the play off positions by a single point. Just twelve months later, Duncan and Murray found themselves on the right side of the play off line but a semi final defeat to Bracknell Town put paid to their hopes for another year. 2023/24 was to be the season to remember however as Chesham stormed to the Southern Premier title on a lofty 90 points. In what could have been a tough first season in the National League South, Duncan and Murray secured a very respectable 59 points and a 13th place finish. The pair will hope to emulate such a finish and stabilise during their upcoming second season at step two.

MVP: Alex Lafleur

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Nathan Minhas

Overall Thoughts: It has to be said how well Chesham did last season. With a home ground that nobody wanted to visit, the Generals managed ten home victories and not at any point was there a concern about relegation - a testament to the sound recruitment carried out last summer. Naturally, a club the size of Chesham are going to be a consideration for a relegation spot in the National League South - especially in a second season - but Duncan and Murray look to have wisely recruited more solid and experienced step two performers this summer. Chesham's defensive record last season was a small cause for concern but the signings of Worthing and Slough regulars Alfie Young and Dan Bayliss should be an upgrade in that area whilst Alex Babos and Giorgio Rasulo add proven step two quality to the central midfield area. With Nathan Minhas a quality operator at this level and Matt McClure always good to chip in with key goals, it is hard to see how a well-run club like Chesham could be involved in a relegation battle this season.

Prediction: No concerns here. Some may put Chesham lower based on name alone, but I foresee another comfortable season, even if positionally the Generals drop a place or two.

Squad brief: The annual dark horses; Farnborough have been regularly tipped to challenge strongly in the National League South over the past few seasons but haven't yet quite delivered on pre-season optimism. With some eye catching acquisitions, supporters will be hoping this is the season the Yellows can break the top seven for the first time since 2010. In goal, the reliable Jack Turner is about to enter his 4th season with Boro and will have some different faces in front of him. At centre back, captain Ollie Robinson remains and will likely be joined by six foot, four Lachlan Byrd after a short spell at Aldershot. Former Torquay man Ali Omar will add competition in this area as will the impressive Louis Lomas although the former Southend and Braintree man may well compete with Luciano D'Auria Henry for the right back slot. Following the departure of the vibrant Reggie Young to Dagenham & Redbridge, manager Spencer Day has signed Ben Greenwood from relegated Weymouth and a familiar face in John Oyenuga who plied his trade for Enfield last season.

Further ahead, fan favourite Aaron Kuhl will continue to anchor the midfield. The 29-year-old will likely play alongside technically gifted Billy Clifford, whose eye-catching signature from National League champions Barnet certainly made National League South followers sit up and take notice. New signings Kai Jennings, who impressed at Walton & Hersham earlier this year, and Renny Smith, who has never quite found a settled home in his career, may well also feature if Farnborough aim to play a diamond due to the lack of wide options in the squad. Last season, ten goal Joe Haigh would have played at the tip of the diamond but is another to have left for Dagenham & Redbridge. For this campaign, Day may well play exciting capture Frank Keita, who has scored and assisted a vast amount of goals at step four level. Alternatively returning for a third spell at the Yellows, new signing Mason Bloomfield may operate from slightly deeper in an interchanging front three. As a front two, Boro have brought in a combination well attuned to playing together with former Ebbsfleet strikeforce Dominic Poleon and Rakesh Bingham ready to lead the line.

Manager: Having been Farnborough manager for nearly fifteen years now, Spencer Day has carved out an intriguing career for himself. A controversial past saw him sign a £200,000 affidavit to save Aldershot FC before being found to have borrowed the money and unable to pay it back. Subsequently, Day, then known as Spencer Trethewy, was kicked out of the club and Aldershot went out of business not too long after in 1992. However, the property developer purchased Chertsey Town in 2007 and went on to be their manager for the next four seasons before leaving for Farnborough in 2011. Initially, Day had to put a substantial amount of his own money in to rescue the club from administration. Nevertheless, this was only a temporary solution as points deductions followed and the club were eventually relegated to step three and then to step four the season after. However, Day stuck with the club during their difficulties and was rewarded with an instant promotion back to the Southern Premier League. A period of consolidation followed before Farnborough were promoted back to the National League South in 2021 after navigating the play offs against Met Police FC and Hayes & Yeading. Since that promotion the Yellows have finished in 12th, 8th and 10th; Day will be hoping this is the season that they managed to break into the play off positions.

MVP: Billy Clifford

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Dominic Poleon

Overall Thoughts: By all accounts, this is an intriguing looking Farnborough side. Spencer Day has recruited wisely to ensure that the core of his team consists of players who have succeeded at this and the level above. Having been involved in some high scoring matches last season, Boro will hope that the additions of Greenwood, Byrd and Lomas add a greater solidity to the backline. Scoring goals wasn't much of a problem with the now departed Ricky Holmes, Richard Chin, Joe Haigh and Jonny Stuttle chipping in over the course of the season. As strong as the additions of Clifford, Poleon and Bingham in particular seem, it is ashame for Farnborough that these signings cannot play alongside those who shone last season. Such are the budget constraints for the club compared to some of the other giants in the division, the Yellows will have to make the most of their small squad and look to bring in impactful loanees, similar to the aforementioned Stuttle, to add much needed depth. To challenge for the top seven this season, it may be that Farnborough need to fall on the fortunate side regarding injuries to their core and add wisely over the course of the season.

Prediction: A hard one to call. Farnborough have an impressive looking starting eleven but lack the depth required over a 46 game season - working the loan system effectively will be vital. Mid-table feels a tad more likely than a play off push.

Squad brief: One tight sole goal defeat later and this Maidstone squad is now completely unrecognisable following disappointment in the National League South Play Off final. George Elokobi faces possibly his most difficult mission yet in putting together a squad fit for another play off challenge following the departures of most, if not all, of his best players. In goal, Alexi Andre-Jnr has departed with former Southend United loanee Nathan Harness joining and looking likely to play a full season of games for the first time in his career. Defensively, the Stones have been ripped apart with Ben Brookes leaving for York City, Temi Eweka also stepping up to the National League with Eastleigh and Charlie Seaman joining Ebbsfleet's promotion push. With the best defensive record in the league last season, Elokobi has been keen to maintain this strength with the signing of dominant centre backs David Agbontohoma and Lexus Beeden from Boreham Wood and Farnborough respectively. At full back, David Sesay fits a very similar profile to the departed Seaman whilst 22-year-old Leo Hamblin or Sam Oguntayo have the big boots of Ben Brookes to fill on the left side.

The Stones midfield will also contain a different dynamic after the departures of Bivesh Gurung and Jordan Higgs. Former Welling man TJ Bramble will likely look to control the game at the base of the midfield with the silky John Gilbert, formerly of Slough, looking to dictate next to him. Elokobi will also hope captain Sam Corne can refind his best form at the head of the midfield. In the wider areas, the Stones look to have taken a punt on players with potential who have lost their way in the past twelve months. Ruben Carvalho found the step up to the National League with Maidenhead a jump too far but Elokobi will hope that he can refind the form he displayed at step three level with Wingate. Likewise, Jephte Tanga has endured a challenging twelve months at Ebbsfleet but he will hope that his return to Maidstone will provide a catalyst for the return of his best form. Elsewhere, Jacob Berkley-Agyepong will be hoping to nail down a starting spot on the wing after signing from Wealdstone in March last season.

Sadly for the Stones, the departures do not stop there with twenty goal Aaron Blair also signing for Eastleigh in the division above. In replacing the 25-year-old, Elokobi has turned to recently relegated Welling United and signed forwards Josh Redfearn and Deon Moore. New Zealander Redfearn has largely plied his trade in his homeland but did manage seven goals in twenty eight National League South appearances upon his move to the Wings midway through last season. The well-travelled Moore had only joined Welling in March and contributed a solitary goal following an equally unsuccessful spell at Woking in the National League. Elsewhere, Elokobi may turn to former Bath City striker Jesse Nwabueze or Dajon Golding, who has recently been playing in Scottish League Two.

Manager: With over two years in charge now, George Elokobi has overseen some memorable moments during his spell as Maidstone United manager. A physically imposing centre back as a player - Elokobi is better known for his days as centre back at Wolverhampton Wanderers and Colchester United. However in  January 2023, the former Premier League player took interim charge of the Stones with them languishing near the bottom of the National League. Elokobi was then confirmed as the permanent boss in March despite results being not winning a single match under him up until that point. Although he certainly had his doubters, Elokobi embarked on a memorable 2023/24 season with Maidstone defying the odds to reach the 5th round of the FA Cup with victories over Barrow, Stevenage and Ipswich Town along the way. A 4th place finish in the league with 83 points saw a play off campaign that was ended at the semi final stage by Worthing. Last season saw a slight regression with a 7th place finish and 79 points albeit with only 9 defeats all season in an ultra competitive league. Although beginning the play off campaign as underdogs, Elokobi's men defeated Worthing and Eastbourne to reach the final where they were ultimately defeated 1-0 by Boreham Wood thus confirming a third successive season in the National League South.

MVP: John Gilbert

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Josh Redfearn

Overall Thoughts: It has been a brutal summer for Maidstone fans with the key components of last season's play off final side dismantled. George Elokobi's success at the Stones has been built upon a rock solid core and the manager has been quick to try and replicate this with his summer incomings. The defence still looks the most adept part of the Maidstone squad with David Agbontahoma and Lexus Beeden quality additions whilst, in midfield, John Gilbert is one of the better midfield creators at this level. Unfortunately, beyond this, Maidstone look significantly weaker than the previous campaign's team. Gone are potentially the best full back pairing in the league in Brookes and Seaman alongside a proven prolific scorer at National League South level in Blair. Most concerning though are Maidstone's replacements for the pacey striker. Josh Redfearn has shown glimpses at this level but the signing of Deon Moore is baffling with the striker failing to impress at barely any of his previous clubs. Player for player, Elokobi's side look weaker overall and there is going to be a large pressure on the defence to keep clean sheets as goals look like they may be hard to come by.

Prediction: There is enough within this Maidstone side to not fall into deeper trouble as some are predicting. However, unless Elokobi can work his magic within the market over the season, this is not a squad capable of challenging for promotion. Mid table.

Squad brief: Following a poor end to last season that saw them survive by a single point, the future looks bright for Salisbury as they have received new investment from Kuwaiti businessman Ali Alhamad. A transformation of the playing squad has taken place with a number of stand out signings made. In goal, manager Brian Dutton has recruited a player familiar with the National League South in Will Buse, after numerous loan spells at Weymouth, Weston Super Mare and Bath City. In defence, the club have swooped for experienced former Tranmere Rovers centre back Tom Davies who has dropped two divisions to play for the club. Following a clean sweep of the Hampton & Richmond end of season awards, Dutton has managed to capture the signature of Dom Revan whilst Taylor Foran also joins on loan from Bromley to complement existing centre backs Owen Dore and Josh Sommerton. The improved calibre of signing continues into the wide areas where Matt Briggs, after a decade at Dorking, has signed alongside former Worthing and Aldershot wide man Tommy Willard.

Moving into midfield and the Whites have taken a further two players from Hampton & Richmond in tough tackling Mike Atkinson and the energetic Josh Keeya. Furthermore, the acquisition of the highly coveted Dorchester Town captain Jordan Ngalo will add real leadership and presence to Dutton's midfield. Nevertheless, one of the huge holes to fill for Salisbury this season is in attacking midfield where 21-year-old Josh Hedges shone. The young starlet has since moved to Chelmsford City and the likes of Noah Coppin, who has recently signed a new deal, will hope to find the form to fill this void.

Up front, the Whites strikers struggled for goals last season so it is no surprise that Dutton has completely revamped his forward line. The club's marquee signing of the summer has seen Matty Taylor, who has over 100 goals in the Football League, join from League Two side Cheltenham Town. The 35-year-old is joined by Ollie Bray, who struggled for minutes at Aldershot Town last season, and 20-year-old Tommy Lee-Higgs, fresh from a stellar season at Bognor Regis Town in step three where he scored 24 times.

Manager: After helping Salisbury to narrow survival last season, Brian Dutton gets the opportunity to consolidate the Whites' place in the National League South. Following a relatively nomadic playing career in the lower leagues, Dutton's coaching career begun at Bristol Rovers in 2017 largely focusing on set pieces. In 2019, he followed fellow former Bristol Rovers men Daryll Clarke and Marcus Stewart to Walsall to become Assistant Manager. It would be two years before Dutton would take the hotseat as Clarke would leave to take charge of Port Vale. However, the 40-year-old would only last 20 games, winning just three of them with an inexperienced squad. It was October 2022 when Dutton was appointed Salisbury manager and consolidated with a mid table position in the Southern Premier League. Nevertheless, his first full season in charge was a wild success with Salisbury finishing in a credible 3rd place and winning the play off final against much fancied AFC Totton to promote to the National League South - the first time the Whites had found themselves at step two level since their reformation. The 2024/25 season was to be difficult as expected; however, Dutton's side never once fell into the relegation zone all season despite a dicey ending that saw only two wins from the final fourteen matches.

MVP: Tom Davies

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Matty Taylor

Overall Thoughts: Salisbury made an excellent start to life back as a step two club last season but a relatively barren late run highlighted the need for investment at the tail end of the campaign. The increased funds now forthcoming from the new investments should turn the Whites from a club clinging onto their status to one that can now properly compete at this level. Summer signings have been positive with experience from higher divisions a necessity but also the capture of a better calibre of step two player giving Salisbury a much stronger look. Signing Revan, Atkinson and Keeya - all standout players from Hampton & Richmond - is a statement of intent whilst the likes of Ngalo and Lee-Higgs from step three have outstanding potential to be successes at this level. However, the loss of Josh Hedges is a big one and currently the club do not appear to have a player who can fill that hole. Despite an excellent three years in charge, Dutton knows that he himself needs to hit the ground running with a new owner at the helm. However, there is no reason why Salisbury cannot comfortably consolidate their position in the division with a more upward look this time around.

Prediction: Another summer needed for Salisbury to build the depth needed to become promotion contenders. However, a season with an equal win/loss record should be obtainable with this squad. Mid table.

Squad brief: With one of the best reputations in non-league for player development, Slough begin another season as a platform for a range of former step three talent to progress their careers. As new goalkeeper Adam Desbois would testify, Scott Davies' side also provide a pathway for players to get their careers back on track. The 24-year-old shot stopper was unfortunate to spend last season with an ACL injury after a stellar 23/24 campaign for Hampton & Richmond. With last season's back four mostly having moved on to pastures new, one player travelling in the opposite direction is left back Tyrese Dyce two years after originally leaving for Maidenhead. Opposite, former Hendon man Tarik Gidaree will provide the attacking intent required on the right. In the centre, physically imposing Reiss Greenidge joins after featuring regularly for Maidstone last season, including during their play off campaign. He will likely be partnered by either the promising Kiki Oshilaja, well-travelled and versatile Peter Ojemen or possibly Davies himself with the 37-year-old slipping into the Rebels' back line at times last season.

Moving into midfield and John Gilbert's departure leaves a real ball-playing hole in this Slough side. Tough tackling Henry Ochieng remains and he could well be partnered by step three signings Tyrique Clarke or Jaiden Drakes-Thomas . Ahead of the midfield anchors, Johnny Goddard plays the role of creator. The 32-year-old earnt a move to Boreham Wood after a goal glut in 23/24 but returned after a few months in November to play under Davies again. In support, Slough will likely opt for new step four signing Wiktor Makowski, who scored a seismic 41 goals and provided 22 assists in a standout campaign for Flackwell Heath. Up front, star striker Slavi Spasov's vitally impressive fifteen goal season saw Southend United swoop. Davies has since signed 25-year-old Jordan Greenidge who brings with him a solid record of 35 goals in 107 National League South appearances.

Manager: Incredibly well-travelled as a player, Scott Davies is a name that will be very familiar to supporters of Aldershot, Oxford United, Wycombe Wanderers and most recently Slough Town. With 179 appearances to his name for the Rebels, the 37-year-old will be looking to break the 200 milestone in 2025/26 after appearing 42 times last season. Such commitments to the playing side have not prevented Davies from becoming one of the most promising managers in non-league since taking the job in November 2022. An 18th place finish was secured that year thus consolidating Slough Town as a National League South side for another season. Following that, the 2023/24 campaign was a real success for Davies with his free-scoring team entertaining with 81 goals over the course of 46 games; nevertheless, they finished 10th just outside the play off positions. Last season was to be trickier for the midfielder with points harder to come by despite continuing to play expansively with 70 goals scored. A mid-table 16th place finish was the outcome with a sizeable gap between the top eight sides and the rest of the division.

MVP: Henry Ochieng

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Jordan Greenidge

Overall Thoughts: It can't go without saying that Slough have lost some terrific players this summer. In fact, in terms of quality, the Rebels may well be the hardest hit in the division with their departures. It is no surprise that Slavi Spasov, David Ogbonna, Dan Bayliss, John Gilbert and Edon Prutl have made progressive career moves. But this is what Slough do and have done with many before such as Leon Chambers-Parillon, Temi Eweka and Munashe Sundire just to name a few who have thrived following a spell under Scott Davies' management. This summer, as in previous summers, it is a guessing game as to which of the new signings are going to be the breakout stars. Could it be prolific Wiktor Makowski, maybe talented midfielder Tyrique Clarke, or perhaps Tarik Gidaree? As in previous seasons, Davies will look to implement an attack minded style and there appears to be real emphasis on physicality with the Greenidges and Henry Ochieng through the spine of the team. Once again, expect Slough to entertain: they will win handsomely, lose handsomely and likely finish around mid-table before the cycle begins again in twelve months time. But in the process, a number of careers will flourish and that is testament to the job that Davies does.

Prediction: Many other teams would struggle with the outgoings Slough have had. But this is all part of their cycle and whilst there will be some tricky moments, it would be a shock to see them in any sort of relegation trouble. Mid table.

Squad brief: 2024/25 was an up and down ride for Weston Super Mare supporters with the club spending the bulk of the season inside the top eight but ultimately missing out on the play offs. The club have managed to retain the bulk of their squad whilst adding a few new faces around the edges. In goal, Max Harris has signed on a permanent deal after a series of impressive loan spells over the past few seasons. Another player to return following a previous loan stint is Callum Wood. The left footed centre back played a series of games on loan from Bristol City during the 2023/24 campaign and now signs on a full-time basis. However, Wood will face competition for a starting spot from club captain Emelyn Lewis, Jason Pope and Sam Avery in the centre of defence. Manager Scott Bartlett seems to have decided to bolster the defence with two new full backs also arriving. Jordan Bastin had made the left back spot his own over the past few years but will now face competition from another former player in Dan Martin, who has also featured prominently for Torquay and Welling in recent seasons. Right back has been a priority position for the Seagulls and Bartlett could not have acquired a more experienced man for the job as former Northern Ireland international Michael Smith has joined from Yeovil.

In midfield, the club lost key asset Dylan Kadji to Wealdstone over the summer. At present, the only signing in the centre has been young 18-year-old Josh Salmon from AFC Bournemouth U21. It would be a good bet that Jacob Jagger-Cane, with over 400 appearances for the club, and James Dodd will line up regularly in this area of the pitch with the likes of Ollie Chamberlain also featuring. However, new signing Dylan Mitchell may well break up the partnership after an impressive loan spell at Hereford in the National League North last season.

Out wide, Will Dawes swapped Chippenham Town for the Seagulls back in March and will be hoping to lock down the right wing position this season. The outstanding Luke Coulson will almost certainly take the left wing spot following nineteen goals and a clean sweep of the end of season awards during 2024/25. Up front, Bartlett managed to recruit a gem of a player in Sam Pearson last season. The 23-year-old hit eleven goals in 35 appearances after signing in October and can play anywhere across the front line if Bartlett decides to operate with a front three. With Reuben Reid's departure in the summer, it will likely be time for Louis Britton to step up to a regular role in the first team squad. The 24-year-old had 38 goals to his name at step four Bristol Manor Farm before signing in March last season and is a real candidate to lead the Seagulls' line this season.

Manager: Rated as one of the best managers in step two, Scott Bartlett initial playing career saw him make over 400 appearances for Salisbury City across almost a decade before moving into coaching after short stints at Weston Super Mare, Bath City and Forest Green Rovers. It was the latter where his coaching career began with an impressive spell in charge of the club's academy which he led into the EFL's structure. Bartlett also had two spells as caretaker manager of the first team - the most notable in which he led Rovers out at Wembley for the 2016 National League play off final where the side lost 3-1 to Grimsby Town. With a desire to manage himself, Bartlett soon took the role of Weston Super Mare manager alongside his academy duties at Forest Green Rovers. A solitary season saw a 15th place finish in the National League South before Bartlett quit stating that he could not devote enough time to the Seagulls. However, after two further years with Rovers' academy, Bartlett stepped away and returned as Weston Super Mare manager in 2019. At this point, the club were playing in the Southern League and with the first two seasons written off by COVID, the 2021/22 season was the first opportunity for the club to bounce back up to step two. A play off defeat by Hayes & Yeading consigned Bartlett's team to another season in the Southern League but they made no mistake in 2022/23 and were crowned champions with 93 points. Consolidation was the aim upon Weston Super Mare's return and the 46-year-old delivered with a respectable 13th place finish. Last season was particular exciting with the club sitting at the top of the division after 18 games following a 15 game unbeaten run. However, a mixed run of form followed and although Bartlett's men were sitting in the play offs with three games to go, they ultimately lost the final three fixtures to finish in 8th despite a commendable 75 point season.

MVP: Luke Coulson

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Sam Pearson

Overall Thoughts: It has been a relatively quiet summer at Weston Super Mare compared to the noise that other clubs have been making. This will not deter Scott Bartlett however who is very precise with his incomings. Expect the manager to add intermittingly to his squad throughout the season with quality operators as they become available. The Seagulls' team looks very similar to last season with Dylan Kadji's absence from midfield the only glaring omission. Michael Smith and Dan Martin will add steel and quality to the full back areas whilst retaining Luke Coulson and Sam Pearson in the attacking areas is pivotal to the club's hopes. Although Bartlett's men were not exactly goal shy last season, what with Coulson's 19 strikes from the wing, they did perhaps just lack a marquee striker like many of the other top sides had. Expecting the 31-year-old left winger to cover that shortfall again is a big ask meaning expectation is going to be on the likes of Louis Britton from the get go. All in all, Weston Super Mare were rather streaky last season and it would not be a surprise to see them engage in various peaks and troughs once again.

Prediction: Truthfully, this is the one prediction I am not happy with. It feels wrong to put Weston Super Mare this low but I am struggling to fit them in any higher. Watch them defy being written off and most likely finish above several of the more fancied sides.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: With a play off push failing to materialise last season, Angelo Harrop has used the summer window to build an almost entirely new squad of his choosing, backed by chairman Spencer Gore. Well-rated goalkeeper Chris Haigh has signed from divisional rivals Worthing and it appears he will command an entirely new defensive line in front of him. Full backs Kian Ronan and Harry Barbrook have joined from Kings Lynn and Ipswich Town respectively - the latter also shining in a loan spell at the back end of last season. At centre back, the experienced David Longe-King joins from relegated St Albans City alongside the impressive Ben Tompkins from Hemel Hempstead. However, the Clarets most impressive signing may well be the acquisition of Joe Grimwood from Barnet - a player who Harrop will be familiar with from their brief time together at Braintree last season.

In midfield, Chelmsford have opted for proven physical, hard-working midfielders with Tom Lapslie and Dominic Odusanya both signing whilst Archie Tamplin will be hoping to retain his spot at the heart of the team. Keep an eye out for Taylor Clark too after an impressive loan spell at Farnborough last season. Another who impressed at 'Boro' recently is Chelmsford club legend Ricky Holmes who has returned after fifteen years away. Pushing him hard for a spot out wide is another returnee in Josh Castiglione and Shiloh Remy fresh from a disappointing spell at Dagenham and Redbridge in the National League.

Former Aldershot man Kai Corbett may also be deployed from the left side next season although he may have aspirations to lead the line for the Clarets. Still, he will have to get past another former Aldershot player in Jack Barham, who has hit ten goals in the league above for the past two years. The jewel in Harrop's crown however may well be 21-year-old Josh Hedges, who looked destined for a move to a higher division after a series of stunning performances and many goal involvements for Salisbury during the last campaign.

Manager: After five years in charge of Chelmsford, Robbie Simpson departed at the end of an ultimately disappointing season that saw the Clarets finish in 11th place. Angelo Harrop, who had masterminded Braintree's play off semi final victory over Chelmsford the season before, had previously been confirmed as the club's new manager for the 2025/26 campaign. After various roles including coaching in the USA and becoming head scout role at one of Norwich FC's development centres, Harrop initially had short stints as manager of Stanway Rovers and Brightlingsea Regent. Nevertheless, it was his spell in joint charge of AFC Sudbury that brought him to the wider attention of those in the higher echelons of non-league. Harrop's Sudbury side managed to reach the first round of the FA Cup and thus drew neighbouring Colchester United - a fixture that would be played in front of the BBC cameras. Braintree Town moved for their man in the summer of 2022 and his first season saw The Iron beat the odds to make the play offs in 7th place. This set the platform for the club's 5th place finish the following season where the 36-year-old guided his underdogs to promotion after a five year absence from the National League. However, with the Iron sat in 20th the following season at the end of November, Harrop was let go and remained out of management until he agreed in March to take the reigns at Chelmsford.

MVP: Josh Hedges

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Jack Barham

Overall Thoughts: Chelmsford have long been the division's nearly men and their business this summer is a real statement of intent to finally achieve the promotion that they long crave. It is impossible to know how the impressive individuals signed will click as a cohesive unit but many components of a title winning side have been put in place: a goalkeeper comfortable with the ball who is also a good shot stopper; an imposing core; and a whole host of goal contributions littered throughout the final third. In Jack Barham, the club could well have acquired the leading marksman for next season and odds would suggest he has a good chance of breaking twenty goals with the supply lines behind him. Pressure will be on Angelo Harrop to deliver a promotion challenge and his summer recruitment does somewhat resemble last season at Braintree when a lot of bodies were brought in. Many did not excel on that occasions and Chelmsford supporters will hope that Harrop has secured the correct blend this summer to see the Clarets feature in the title race. Certainly, with the squad they have put together, there is no doubt that Chelmsford should be in the conversation for promotion.

Prediction: On paper, Chelmsford look a real threat to others aiming for the title. Like a few others who have rebuilt their entire squad, it might take a while for the team's cohesion to grow. Play Offs.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: Disaster is an apt word to describe Dagenham & Redbridge's 2024/25 season. Ranging from the inept to scarcely believable, the National League regulars dropped down to step two for the first time in 25 years. As you would expect many of last season's squad have departed with a new-look Daggers, now under Qatari ownership, aiming to bounce back to the National League at the first time of asking. Goalkeeper Sam Howes takes over between the sticks after the club juggled with replacements following Elliott Justham's surprise departure last season. With a back three under new manager Lee Bradbury looking likely, you would expect new arrival Christian Maghoma to contend for a spot at the heart of it. The under contract Paul Kalambayi and Trent Rendall will both be hoping for a starting spot but will face competition from ex-Eastleigh man Corey Panter and former Notts County and Fylde defender Sam Graham. Left wing back will likely be a contest between Reggie Young - a dynamic wide man signed from Farnborough, or Harvey Broad - a 19-year-old loan signing from Coventry City. On the opposite flank, the lively Dermi Lusala, signed from Buxton, looks set to be first choice at present although recently signed Andre Burley could also be an option on the right.

Central midfield is an area the Daggers will be keen to strengthen and Bradbury has recruited the experienced George Marsh, once of AFC Wimbledon, to patrol the central area most likely alongside 33-year-old Timothee Dieng, who has consistently starred in League One and Two for the past decade. Connor Lawless and Christian N'Guessan will supply alternative options for the Daggers in this area. Furthermore, the departure of Josh Rees, who managed 31 league goals in his two seasons at the club, leaves a big goalscoring hole in the number ten role. Supporters will hope Joe Haigh, fresh from 10 goals himself last season in the National League South, will be the man to maintain the prolificacy in that position.

However, the headlines have been made this summer with the Daggers' striker signings. Firstly, Donovan Wilson appeared a coup considering his last four seasons have involved relatively regular football at League Two level. Then the capture of Ashley Hemmings appeared to be one of the highest profile step two summer acquisitions following a 30-goal season for Kidderminster last time out. Nevertheless, both were trumped by the extraordinary news that former Newcastle and Liverpool striker Andy Carroll had agreed to join the club as player and part owner.

Manager: Lee Bradbury is best known for his time at Bournemouth as a player. Following Eddie Howe's first departure from the club back in 2011, Bradbury stepped into the managerial hotseat and guided the Cherries into the play offs where they lost in the semi finals. The following season was a chastening experience for the manager who couldn't keep the club's upward trajectory going. Following this, Bradbury dropped down the divisions to manage Havant and Waterlooville where he led the club to multiple promotions culminating in a season in the National League. Relegation followed however also resulting in the end of the manager's 7 year stint in charge. A short spell in charge of Eastbourne, ended by their financial crisis, followed before an impressive stint as assistant manager at Crawley Town culminated with him landing the Eastleigh job. Not without his critics, Bradbury led the side to mid-table twice during his season and a half before being sacked early into the 2023/24 campaign after a winless start. Recently the 49-year-old had been number two to Darren Moore during Port Vale's promotion to League One but jumped at the chance to become a manager again at the recently relegated Daggers.

MVP: Ashley Hemmings

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Ashley Hemmings

Overall Thoughts: Favourites with the bookies, Dagenham & Redbridge's whirlwind twelve months has shown no signs of slowing down. Despite calamity after calamity, there may just be signs on the horizon that the Daggers fortunes may be for turning. The return of club legend Anwar Uddin will add knowhow behind the scenes whilst Andy Carroll's arrival provides positive publicity alongside a Qatari ownership group that supporters are hoping will succeed where former stakeholders Club Underdog could not. Unsurprisingly, supporters are cautiously optimistic with one of the most potent looking striking trios in Carroll, Hemmings and Wilson. However, there is a lopsided look to the Daggers with a central midfield and defence that has seen sensible acquisitions but which still contain a fair number of damaged goods from the disasters of before. Inevitably, the Daggers will flex their financial muscle throughout the campaign so being in contention after the opening months would represent a fair start.  With other challengers in the division polishing and fine-tuning around the edges, Lee Bradbury's men are in need of a revolution - and whilst this has begun, it may take a little longer for the benefits to bring about a better tomorrow.

Prediction: Rome wasn't built in a day, and this Daggers squad - whilst star-studded in places - is still a work in progress. Do not expect a title challenge - Dagenham & Redbridge have still got some sorting out to do.

Squad brief: An outstanding campaign last season for Eastbourne saw them miss out on the National League South title by just one point. Following a semi-final defeat in the play offs, manager Adam Murray left for Kidderminster Harriers in the National League North and inevitably several members of his squad departed as well. Former Sutton manager Matt Gray is tasked with revamping a squad, likely into his favoured 4-4-2 formation, that is now without many of its key men from last season. Impressive goalkeeper Joe Wright has departed after just a season with Forest Green Rovers backup Jamie Searle joining permanently instead. Influential defenders Ollie Kensdale and Pierce Bird have both left which likely means 20-year-old Freddie Carter and mid-season signing Cameron Gbadebo will begin the campaign as first choice centre backs. Kai Woollard-Innocent, who impressed after signing from Hemel during last season, looks set to slide over into left back whilst new signing Harvey Lintott looks accustomed to completing the quartet at right back.

In central midfield, Dominic Odusanya would have been an ideal fit for Matt Gray but has departed to Chelmsford. Nevertheless, Gray has brought in one of his most trusted recruits in Craig Eastmond, who previously captained Sutton United to the Football League. With Jack Clarke also departing over the summer, Gray has moved quick to secure young former Maidstone midfielder Tayt Trusty. The industrious Mo Sagaf also comes in after a tricky time at recently promoted Boreham Wood. New signing Joey Phuthi will be sure to get fans on their feet with his solo runs from the right wing whilst former Oldham man Jesurun Uchegbulam typifies the sort of fast, direct winger that normally excels in Gray's system. Despite attacking talents Yahya Bamba and Jason Adigun no longer at the club, 24-goal George Alexander remains and will likely spearhead the attack possibly alongside new signing Pemi Aderoju, who has signed on loan from Peterborough United.

Manager: Following around a year and a half hiatus from the game, Matt Gray returned to management at the beginning of the summer as Adam Murray's replacement as Eastbourne Borough manager. After initial coaching spells at Eastleigh, Aldershot and Crawley, Gray joined Sutton United initially in that capacity at the end of 2018. With long-serving Paul Doswell stepping down in April 2019, Gray took the role on an interim basis before being confirmed as the new manager for the 2019/20 season. In a COVID affected campaign, Sutton consolidated in mid-table before stunning the rest of the division the following season with a title triumph. Gray's first season as a Football League manager was equally impressive with an 8th place finish and EFL Trophy final appearance. A further 14th place finish was secured the season after but Gray's reign was to come to an end at the end of 2023 with the club adrift in the League Two relegation zone. Despite an impressive resume, Gray spent the entirety of the 2024/25 season without a managerial position but Eastbourne quickly snapped him up with the aim of improving upon their third place finish last season.

MVP: Camron Gbadebo

Top Goalscorer Prediction: George Alexander

Overall Thoughts: Following last season's efforts will be a huge task for Matt Gray. Although seen somewhat of a coup, Gray is following one of the best step two managers available at the moment in Adam Murray and will aim to play a very different brand of football from his predecessor. In that sense, it may be a blessing in disguise that several of the Sports' squad have followed Murray or moved onto pastures new in order to give Gray a chance to build his own side. On the other hand, the club did lose some very strong step two players in Jason Adigun, Yahya Bamba, Dominic Odusanya, Jack Clarke and Pierce Bird whilst circumstance led to a defender of Ollie Kensdale's capability being available last season. Gray's new side promise to be very direct and hard-working with emphasis on wingers who excel in one-on-one situations. When the 43-year-old took over at Sutton, he initially stabilised in his first season before winning the division in his second. It would not be a surprise if Eastbourne dropped slightly in position this coming season with Gray planting the seeds for the club to be a sustained presence in the upper echelons of the division for the seasons to come.

Prediction: Efficient football and George Alexander's goals will ensure Eastbourne are competitive. But will they be as frugal as last season? And are there enough goals amongst Alexander's supporting cast? A battle for 7th could be on the cards.

Squad brief: Ready for his first full season in charge, Lee Allison has signed heavily this summer in a bid to transform Hemel Hempstead from mid-table step two side to National League South play off contenders. Two new goalkeepers have been signed after Craig King's departure with Michael Johnson arriving from St Albans and the experienced Steve Arnold hoping to claim the number one jersey following his move from Sutton United. In defence, first choice right back Samuel Adenola has real competition on his hands following the signing of Devante Stanley from Havant & Waterlooville. On the other side, exciting attacking left back Darion Dowrich continues his upward ascent in the game after signing from Cray Wanderers. Captain Kyle Ajayi will most likely continue to command the Tudors from centre back and will likely be partnered by Jordan Thompson, Jack Bateson or Charlie Rowan - both signed from Weymouth - after Ben Tompkins left for Chelmsford City.

In midfield, Allison has added real National League nous with the acquisition of Jermaine Anderson from Woking. With the impressive Matthew Achuba also in contention for a central midfield starting spot after joining from Wingate & Finchley in November 2024, fellow new signings Hamza Semakula from Aveley and Jake Gray - former captain of Hampton & Richmond - help to provide great depth in this area. Despite star man Brandon Barzey's departure, wide options look strong with the invaluable versatility of Mauro Vilhete and former Welsh international George Williams a real asset to younger wingers of the squad such as Oreofe Bello. The wily Joe White will likely continue to operate from behind the striker but he will face competition from former Barnet man Finlay Wilkinson.

Up front, Allison has a range of options including the experienced Ade Azeez, Isiah Noel-Williams and Trae Cook-Appiah, who is on his way back from a terrible knee injury. However, the most exciting option may be young Miller Matthews-Lewis who already has nearly sixty National League South appearances, 11 goals and a range of impressive appearances at just the age of 20.

Manager: With a steady semi-professional playing career at the likes of Boreham Wood, Arlesey Town and Biggleswade Town, Lee Allinson is climbing the managerial ranks of non-league football. An initial spell as assistant manager at St Albans under his father Ian in 2018 was short lived as Biggleswade took a gamble on him. After guiding the Waders into play off contention, Hendon swooped to appoint him in November 2019 after just a few months in the role. Five seasons of keeping the club in the Southern Premier League caught the eye of others and it was Hemel Hempstead who decided to take a chance on the 38-year-old. With the club plummeting down the table under Bobby Wilkinson, Allinson immediately had a positive impact and managed to take an impressive 40 points from his 26 matches in charge to dispel any relegation concerns. With a full season now in front of him, Allinson will be hoping to push the club into unlikely play off contention this coming campaign.

MVP: Kyle Ajayi

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Millar Matthews-Lewis

Overall Thoughts: Lee Allinson is building something very special at Hemel Hempstead. The 39-year-old has proven to be a quality operator during his spell at Hendon and brief time at Hemel so far and it is no surprise to hear the club being referenced as dark horses for a play off spot in some quarters. Despite some high profile departures with the likes of Brandon Barzey and Ben Tompkins moving on, the Tudors' manager has brought in a range of proven talent at this level and some incredibly exciting young players who have flourished elsewhere. Step two is not the limit at all for the likes of Darion Dowrich, Finlay Wilkinson and Millar Matthews-Lewis whilst the squad contains experience that can still positively impact on the pitch in the form of Steve Arnold, Mauro Vilhete, Jermaine Anderson and Kyle Ajayi to name a few. On the whole, this appears to be a very well balanced squad with quality options in all areas and in a division where some of the higher profile clubs may well be mismanaged, back this Hemel Hempstead side to be one whose resources are fully maximised.

Prediction: Never do all of the fancied sides achieve their goals. There will be opportunity for at least one of the underdogs to break the top seven. If anyone can, Hemel under Lee Allinson can. Play off contenders.

Squad brief: Following their 2005 reformation, Hornchurch managed to make it back to the National League South last season for the first time since 2013. Darryl McMahon's side finished 9th albeit 10 points away from 8th position and only three above 12th. The Urchins were secure in defence last season but the departure of impressive loanee Mason Terry had left them short in goal until Arthur Nasta joined on loan from Wolves for the season. The young goalkeeper will be pushed by Rhys Byrne - fresh from 22 appearances at Salisbury last season. In McMahon's usual 3-5-2 formation, the 42-year-old favours centre backs who can advance out with the ball but he has also ensured he has strong defenders in the shape of Giles Phillips, Harry Gibbs, Nathan Bertram-Cooper and 37-year-old stalwart Dave Winfield. At right wing back, the manager has moved for a talent that he worked with at Dagenham & Redbridge in Josh Hare. The 30-year-old will likely compete for a starting spot with Will Greenidge, who was a consistent performer after joining from Colchester United in January or the evergreen Myles Weston, who shows no signs of slowing down at the age of 37. On the opposite flank, McMahon tends to deploy a player with over 300 Championship appearances in Sean Scannell.

Last season saw the consistent pairing of Tom Wraight and Charlee Adams in central midfield. Fellow squad members Emmanuel Harvest and Ollie Muldoon will continue to push the two regulars; however, their path to the first team may have become tougher following the acquisition of Josh Rees. The former Dagenham & Redbridge player scored over 30 goals in the National League during the past two campaigns and will add a much needed threat from deeper. Likely to be deployed in front of Rees is the equally prolific Charlie Ruff with 38 goals in 106 games for Chelmsford City, although Charlie Pegrum - returning as a permanent signing - will be aiming to make the spot his own.

Up front Darren McQueen managed 13 goals last season alongside veteran playmaker Angelo Balanta. Further competition has been added to that area this campaign with Henry Hearn signing permanently after four goals in a short loan spell last season. Also, a wildcard signing from McMahon is 34-year-old Joe Taylor, who despite his advancing years managed 103 goals in the past two seasons for Ramsgate.

Manager: At just 41 years of age, Darryl McMahon has already experienced more than most in his managerial career so far. A reasonable playing career that saw spells at Leyton Orient, Stevenage, Farnborough and Ebbsfleet amongst others was ended by the man himself in his early 30s as he sought a career in coaching. It was Ebbsfleet where he started as manager in 2015 and McMahon immediately gained success with a 2nd place finish in the National League South. However, a gutting penalty shoot out defeat to Maidstone in the play off final denied McMahon promotion in his debut season. History nearly repeated itself 12 months later with another appearance in the play off final but this time Ebbsfleet gained promotion with a 2-1 victory over Chelmsford. The dream start to management continued with a 6th place finish in the National League and a third successive play off campaign but this time Ebbsfleet lost at the semi-final stage to Tranmere Rovers. McMahon left shortly into the 2018/19 campaign before taking on the Macclesfield Town job in 2019. The League Two side ran into financial difficulties shortly into his tenure however and McMahon soon swapped Moss Road for Victoria Road as he became Dagenham & Redbridge boss. Numerous frustrating seasons of pushing for the play offs but ultimately falling short followed before his dismissal in February 2023. After nearly a year away from first-team management, McMahon took the hotseat at runaway Isthmian Premier league leaders Hornchurch following Steve Morrison's departure. With promotion completed that season, Hornchurch embarked on a quietly successful first season back in the National League South with a 9th place finish.

MVP: Josh Rees

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Charlie Ruff

Overall Thoughts: A solid first season back in the National League South for Hornchurch has provided them with a platform to launch a play off challenge for this coming campaign. Statistically last season, the Urchins' output was different to what a traditionally open Darryl McMahon side usually achieves with a resolute defence and harder work for goals. It is therefore not a surprise that most of Hornchurch's summer recruitment has been on identifying prolific goalscorers from midfield in Rees and Ruff alongside a stronger support cast up front to McQueen and Balanta. In terms of the manager, McMahon is no stranger to success at this level with Ebbsfleet and certainly showed his capability of producing attacking football at Dagenham & Redbridge in the league above. Nevertheless, this squad does contain numerous players whose best days have perhaps been and gone, and you have to wonder if it may take a further season for Hornchurch to transition some ageing heroes of yesterday out for a more dynamic cliental. On the ball, the Urchins look a potentially very dangerous proposition but as a package the side perhaps look a touch short in pace and dynamism. It remains to be seen if the athleticism of other sides may hurt Hornchurch off the ball during transitions.

Prediction: Hornchurch have added players of pedigree to a solid mid-table squad. But are there enough legs in key areas throughout this Urchins squad? Competitive but upper-mid-table.

Squad brief: It finally happened. After years of defying the odds, Alan Devonshire's Maidenhead finally succumbed to relegation despite a great late effort at survival. As expected, the decks have been cleared - some through choice and others out of the club's control such as the departures of Reece Smith and Casey Pettit. However, the Magpies have signed appropriately for the level starting with the goalkeeper position. Craig Ross' departure has paved the way for ex-Aldershot keeper Jordi Van Stappershoef to take the reigns as number one. In front of the new goalkeeper, Alan Devonshire likes height amongst his centre backs and former Hartlepool centre back Manny Onariase will certainly provide that alongside the physical Will De Havilland. The Magpies have added two dynamic full backs to their squad as well with Ryan Bartley signing after a short stint at Gateshead last season whilst left back Jordan Ragguette comes in following rave reviews from Salisbury supporters. Dependable full back Owen Cochrane will also be aiming to nail down one of the starting full back slots.

In the middle of the park, Casey Pettit's departure leaves a hole but this has been expertly filled by tireless midfielder Matt Robinson, whose arrival could be seen as somewhat of a coup at this level. His partner will likely be Kane Ferdinand, who has over 250 National League appearances to his name, or the returning Harry Pritchard who may alternate between central midfield and the left wing. In the attacking third, Maidenhead have wisely signed a variety of options. The aforementioned Pritchard may well be stationed on the left but equally set piece king Sam Barratt or new signing Callum Harriott will hope to stake their claim for a starting spot. On the right, rapid winger Josh Popoola will be hoping to keep out the returning Jayden Mitchell-Lawson who missed most of last season through injury.

Behind the striker, with 18 goals and 11 assists last season, Devonshire has opted for an exciting talent from Gosport Borough in Asher Yearwood. The 28-year-old will hope to link with striker Josh Umerah following the latter's tough campaign at Dagenham & Redbridge or Corie Andrews who led the line for Oxford City last season. Potentially, new signing Liam Dulson may get the nod. Despite a tough season in League Two for Cheltenham Town, the 23-year-old is prolific at step three level with Ware FC and Bedford Town.

Manager: Since finishing an impressive playing career, Alan Devonshire has carved out an almost equally as impressive managerial career at non-league level. The former West Ham and England midfielder has only managed three clubs over a 25 year managerial career highlighting his nous and longevity. Multiple promotions with Hampton and Richmond in the early noughties saw Devonshire move to manage Braintree where he achieved three top half finishes across four seasons in the National League. Upon moving to Maidenhead to become manager there for the second time in his career, Devonshire won instant promotion to the National League where he maintained Maidenhead's status in the top tier of non-league for eight seasons. However, the 2024/25 campaign was to be the one where Devonshire's heroics were not quite enough to secure survival. Despite an impressive late run and 52 points gained, Maidenhead missed out on survival by a solitary point.

MVP: Matt Robinson

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Josh Umerah

Overall Thoughts: For the first time in almost a decade, expectation will be on Maidenhead United to finish at the top end of a league. Alan Devonshire has certainly put together a seasoned squad full of work rate and experience that looks capable of grinding out victories in the toughest of moments. The core spine to a Maidenhead side is always key to their success and the physicality of De Havilland, Onariase, Robinson, Ferdinand and Umerah is probably amongst, if not, the highest in the division. Despite a tricky few seasons, former Dagenham & Redbridge striker Umerah will likely be given a real show of faith and could well flourish at this level with the direct style and amount of crosses Maidenhead will look to employ. To fulfill this obligation, full backs Ragguette and Bartley look the correct profile to consistently be overlapping down the flanks whilst Barratt and Pritchard possess the quality of delivery to allow the Maidenhead front line to thrive. Ready to enforce their physical style upon opponents, it will be interesting to see how Maidenhead cope out of possession against the increasing number of fluent footballing sides in the division.

Prediction: On paper, this appears a very well-formed squad ready to compete at the top end of the division. Maidenhead will certainly be heavily involved, but there may just be a couple of teams with that extra x-factor at present. Play offs.

Squad brief: Leading the division at the beginning of March, Dorking Wanderers came agonisingly close to an instant promotion back to the National League. However, a few too many draws just saw them drop three points short in what was potentially the most hotly contested National League South top seven ever. Following a whirlwind defeat to Boreham Wood in the play offs, manager Marc White has trimmed the edges of his squad with some club veterans departing such as Barry Fuller, Matt Briggs and Bobby Joe-Taylor. With only three signings to date, it looks like the club are choosing to begin the season with a smaller squad and leaving potential to add as the campaign draws on. Harrison Foulkes looks set to continue in goal after joining from Eastbourne Borough a year ago whilst Brennan Camp, Tony Craig, Jordan Norville-Williams and new signing Louis Annesley will compete for spots in the Wanderers traditional back three. Prolific right wing back Jimmy Muitt will likely continue as the club's number one right wing back although Niall McManus may face a fight for the left sided role following the summer acquisition of Dennon Lewis - formerly of Woking and Boreham Wood.

Central midfield is an area of depth for the side. Josh Taylor would appear to command one of the two slots but new signing Frank Vincent or former York City man Dan Pybus, now recovered after a host of injuries, will be looking to establish themselves in White's midfield. Furthermore, the likes of Dan Gallagher and George Francomb will hope to be at the base of the midfield or slightly deeper within the back three whilst veteran Luke Moore's experience should come in handy through the centre over a long season. Higher up the pitch, Charlie Carter may well have a case as the best attacking midfielder at step two level although James McShane, now fit after a long-term ACL injury, will point to a seventeen goal season in the league above only two seasons ago. Talking of goals, Jason Prior and Alfie Rutherford look set to continue a partnership that yielded 33 league goals between them last season.

Manager: Marc White is never short of an opinion or two making him one of the more unconventional characters in non-league. White is the owner and chairman of Dorking Wanderers alongside being the longest serving manager in the division. Having bankrolled the club for the past 20 years, the former player turned manager led the club to 12 promotions in 23 years from the Crawley & District league to the National League itself. The 2022/23 season saw White lead the club to survival in their debut season at Step 1 despite 91 goals being conceded. However, they were unable to repeat the trick the following year with a 23rd place finish and relegation back to the National League South. Embroiled in a title battle all season, Dorking eventually finished 6th - although only three points from the title. A play off quarter final against fellow recent National League side Boreham Wood saw the Wanderers 3-1 up with nine minutes remaining, only to lose 4-3 after added time. Despite this disappointing setback, White will be hoping his 26th season at the helm proves to be a memorable one.

MVP: Charlie Carter

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Alfie Rutherford

Overall Thoughts: Amongst all the discussions around title contenders this season, Dorking have not been a prominent part of the pre-season fanfare - possibly due to a lack of high-profile arrivals. Nevertheless, it may well be that the Wanderers already possess the artillery to mount another title challenge. Last season's 86 points came despite a fairly horrendous run of injuries across the campaign. Not to mention, Marc White's side were also the top goalscorers in the league, plus they have not lost any of their star men to a higher division. This contingent of Dorking players are well-versed tactically and possess a particular type of character that work effectively with how White operates. The avoidance of significant injuries to key players may well prove the deciding factor in quite how well the side go. For example, there is currently little backup to Alfie Rutherford and Jason Prior in attack should injury occur. The question has to be asked also if age will finally catch up to the likes of Craig, Moore, McShane and the aforementioned Prior. However, White will be confident of challenging at the top again and will no doubt be wily around the transfer and loan market throughout the season should he need it.

Prediction: It would be very dangerous to write Dorking Wanderers off. It would be little surprise to me if they won the National League South this season. They will go close once again.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: Despite a series of disastrous recruitment decisions last summer that led to relegation and a rock bottom finish in the National League, Ebbsfleet have been determined not to make the same mistake twice with business completed early. The majority of last season's mishaps have long departed and the club have added experienced players who have performed well in recent seasons. One player who typifies this is new club captain Max Ehmer, who with over 600 appearances for Gillingham adds a wealth of experience to what appears an extremely strong defence spoilt with options. The club have also raided Tonbridge Angels for their captain Jamie Fielding and exciting 21-year-old left footer Ronny Nelson whilst fellow burgeoning young prospects Mustapha Olagunji and Maxx Manktelow will also be aiming for starting spots in the back three after impressing towards the end of last season. 38-year-old Mark Cousins looks set to continue in goal behind them despite the signing of Giosue Bellagambi from Barnet. The wing back options look incredibly strong for step two with one of last season's outstanding right wing backs in Charlie Seaman joining from Maidstone to compete with Josh Passley, and an experienced multiple promotion winner in Ben Coker joining from National League champions Barnet to roam the left-hand-side.

Manager Josh Wright has also moved to sign experience for the centre of midfield with Jake Hessenthaler joining from also relegated Dagenham & Redbridge. The 31-year-old is likely to be partnered by Toby Edser although new signing Gene Kennedy from Welling United is likely to also feature over the season. Further ahead, there are a range of options for Wright depending on how many strikers he wishes to play. The talented George Moncur and Josh Coley are likely to feature heavily in support of the front man although Aaron Cosgrove will hope to continue his good form from last season and new signing Lennon Peake could well be an exciting wildcard after an excellent season with Enfield Town. Up front, the departures of Dominic Poleon and Rakesh Bingham would leave a big hole in most teams but the acquisition of Kwesi Appiah, with Dominic Samuel in support, gives the Fleet power and experience in attack.

Manager: After fully being thrown into the deep end last season, the 2025/26 campaign represents the first full pre-season for Josh Wright as a manager. The 35-year-old boasts an impressive playing career that saw him play frequently in the Championship for Scunthorpe and Millwall before notable spells for Leyton Orient, Southend, Bradford and Gillingham in League One. A return to Leyton Orient towards the back end of his career occurred in League Two before the former central midfielder dropped into the non-league, first with Billericay Town and after with Ebbsfleet. Wright helped Ebbsfleet to win the National League South and was ever present as the club secured survival during their first season back at National League level. Nevertheless, with the Fleet rooted to the bottom of the division during the 2024/25 campaign, Wright swapped his boots for the manager's hotseat. Although he was unable to perform a miracle and avoid relegation, Wright oversaw a number of improved displays and will hope to restore a winning culture to the Fleet this season.

MVP: George Moncur

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Kwesi Appiah

Overall Thoughts: Make no mistake, Ebbsfleet United have signed spectacularly over the summer. The squad is littered with invaluable experience from the higher divisions in Max Ehmer, Ben Coker, George Moncur, Mark Cousins and Kwesi Appiah to name a few. Sometimes clubs run the risk in overpopulating a squad with too many journeymen looking for a final pay day, but Ebbsfleet have seemingly created a hybrid of experience and excellent young talent with the likes of Ronny Nelson, Lennon Peake, Charlie Seaman and Mustapha Olagunju ready to feature heavily. Goals should not be a problem for this Fleet side with Appiah coming off the back of a 24 goal season at Boreham Wood and a strong looking attacking group of Cosgrove, Moncur, Peake and Coley like to operate behind him. At the other end, 98 goals conceded in 24/25 was an untenable total but summer signings around the defensive third of the pitch look professional and astute. Some may point to Josh Wright's lack of managerial experience but the 35-year-old equipped himself well in a very difficult situation last season and has overseen a successful squad transition over the past six months. All in all, it is hard not to make a case for Ebbsfleet to be successful this season - all of the boxes are ticked and as ever it will come down to the finest margins in the most difficult of moments.

Prediction: Ebbsfleet have managed to put together a strong squad this summer than they had last season. Undoubtedly, they are one of the teams to beat and it would be surprising if they did not go very close to the league title. It is a toss of a coin, but they are runners up for me.

Potential Line up

Squad brief: So close yet so far for Torquay United last season. Missing out on promotion by virtue of goal difference will have hurt but the Gulls have been refreshed over the course of the summer to pursue a return to the National League once more. Manager Paul Wotton has chosen to fine tune around the edges of his squad only settling for players who would improve the first team. James Hamon, who originally followed the manager in from Truro City last season, remains as the club's first choice goalkeeper with the colossal duo of Sam Dreyer and Jordan Dyer stationed in front of him at centre back. An impressive back four is completed with Jay Foulston at left back and Jordan Thomas at right back with the 24-year-old signing permanently after an impressive loan spell from Yeovil Town last season.

Central midfield has been an area that Wotton has looked to significantly strengthen with the likes of Omar Mussa and Lirak Hasani departing. Two National League calibre midfielders have joined the Gulls with Tamworth workhorse Munashe Sundire and former Yeovil and Oldham box-to-box midfielder Matt Worthington signed up. Competition for places will be rife with the impressive Dan Hayfield remaining and the further signing of cultured midfielder Sonny Blu Lo-Everton too. Behind the striker, January signing Matt Jay was outstanding in attacking midfield last season and he will need to be again considering 24-year-old Callum Dolan has been acquired. Former Bromley man Louis Dennis is another candidate for the role behind the striker but can also feature from the left although dynamic dribbler Dylan Morgan will be aiming to maintain that spot in the side.

From the right, 25-year-old Jordan Young appears to have made that position his own with ten goals last season whilst leading man Cody Cooke hit nineteen himself. However, with the striker now at the age of 32, Wotton has perhaps decided he needs an alternative option across the whole season and as a result has signed Sonny Fish from Crawley despite the 22-year-old barely playing a first team game last season.

Manager: Having built up an impressive playing career largely on the south coast, Paul Wotton has continued that trend as a manger. A 14 year initial stint at Plymouth with almost 400 appearances, two promotions and numerous seasons spent in the Championship have Wotton represented in the club's hall of fame. Shorter spells at Southampton and Yeovil followed before a final spell back at Plymouth in the twilight of his career where he surpassed the 400 game mark comfortably. Following Wotton's retirement in 2015, he remained at his hometown club as first-team coach for a number of seasons before leaving in 2019. Shortly after, Wotton gained the role of manager at Southern Premier League South side Truro City. However, his first season in charge ended in disappointment with Truro at the summit of the division when the league was postponed for COVID. Ultimately, the club were not promoted and with 2020/21 written off, the momentum was gone by the time the 2021/22 campaign rolled around as Truro finished in 8th place. Nevertheless, the following season saw a vast improvement with a 3rd place finish and success in the play offs as the Tinners beat Bracknall 3-2 in the final to promote to the National League South. Even more impressive were Wotton's achievements considering the club had no permanent home ground for his tenure. The 2023/24 season was to be one of consolidation with Truro comfortably surviving in 16th place before Wotton took the job as Torquay United manager. His debut season in charge of the Gulls was impressive with 89 points gained but in a cruel twist of fate, former side Truro City also finished on 89 points and finished top courtesy of two more goals scored. With the play offs ending at the semi final stage, Wotton will be aiming to emulate his former side this coming season.

MVP: Sam Dreyer

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Cody Cooke

Overall Thoughts: Wow - this is an incredibly strong Torquay United squad; one befitting of a club in the division above. Despite narrowly missing out last season, Wotton would have been self-aware enough to have noticed the side drew too many games and at times there was an overreliance on striker Cody Cooke for goals. Summer recruitment looks to fix this issue with Sonny Fish offering a credible alternative but also a range of players in the trio behind the striker who have the capabilities to hit double figures too. The Gulls are also one of the only clubs from last season's title race to have not sold any key figures to teams higher up the footballing pyramid. Recruitment has been on their terms and retaining the likes of Sam Dreyer, arguably the best centre back in the division, and Matt Jay, one of the more potent attacking midfielders in the league, is an example of the pulling power that Torquay have. In fact, the problem Wotton might have is working out his best combinations from the plethora of midfield options that he has and ensuring he can keep those happy who are not featuring as much. During the tense run in last season, Wotton's men managed to win seven of their last eight games showing that the team's nerve was not in question and if it comes down to the wire again, back Torquay to get over the line on this occasion.

Prediction: Torquay's have quality operators in every single position throughout their team. Such improved depth in the top half of the pitch should see the Gulls more potent than previously. Back against them at your peril. Champions.

Squad brief: The nearly men of the National League South; in their three seasons at the level, Worthing have finished 4th twice and 3rd once, falling in the play offs on each occasions. In a bid to get over the line, manager Chris Agutter has overseen some changes to his squad this summer. To start with, the Rebels lost two seasoned keepers in Chris Haigh and Lucas Covolan so have moved to bring in promising 19-year-old Seb Stacey on loan from MK Dons. Within the back three, Joe Cook and Sam Beard remain crucial components whilst Aarran Racine has committed solely to playing after a spell of over a year in retirement acting as the club's assistant manager. To strengthen further at centre back, Harry Ransom has signed from Sutton in search of regular football with the club also acquiring promising prospect Toby Byron from Wingate & Finchley. At wing back, 34-year-old club favourite Nick Wheeler shows no signs of slowing down from the left whilst club captain Joel Colbran has the right wing back spot tied down.

After returning from a self-imposed career break, tough tackling Glen Rea will once again anchor the Rebels midfield. He will be joined by the hugely influential Jack Spong, who has been linked with clubs higher up the pyramid such was the strength of his performances last season. To add competition to this area, Agutter has signed the combative Kwaku Frimpong from Carshalton Athletic and box-to-box midfielder Matt Burgess from step three Bognor Regis Town. Former Hampton & Richmond captain Odei Martin also offers a class touch and control in the middle of the pitch. Just ahead in the number ten role, the Rebels suffered their biggest loss this summer with the departure of goals and assists machine Danny Cashman to League Two Crawley Town. Such a talent is irreplaceable but Agutter has looked to fill the void with a mercurial wildcard in Razzaq Coleman De-Graft. The 27-year-old has dazzled at Aveley and Hornchurch in recent seasons and now gets the opportunity to showcase his talents in a system that should suit him.

In attack Muhammadu Faal and Liam Nash, responsible for 27 goals collectively last season, departed Worthing for pastures new this summer. However, Agutter has been quick to sign a former favourite in Brad Dolaghan. The 20-year-old made an instant impact two seasons ago when bursting through the Worthing academy to score seven goals in nine National League South games before being signed by West Ham United. The Rebels have ensured more depth up front with the acquisitions of Anointed Chukwu from Enfield Town and Nathan Odokonyero, who had a tough time at Ebbsfleet United but has shown prolificacy in the past at step two and three level. 2024/25 Worthing Young Player of the Season Temi Babalola also remains after scoring eleven times in an impressive debut campaign for the Rebels.

Manager: Although not having a playing career of note, Chris Agutter has plied his trade in coaching for over twenty years to become one of non-league's most respected managers. The 42-year-old started off his journey as a development coach and soon represented Brighton at their regional development centre as an academy coach. In 2015, Agutter became the lead of Eastbourne's academy whilst combining this as assistant manager to the first team. Nevertheless, it was in 2017 when his pathway into senior football really started as he was appointed manager of Hastings United succeeding Adam Hinshelwood. A 10th place finish in the Isthmian League South followed before the 2018/19 season saw the club relocated to the Isthmian League Premier South East. 3rd place was secured but Hastings failed to advance beyond the play off semi finals. COVID struck during the following campaign when the U's were leading the division and history repeated itself again the following season. Agutter left before gaining that much deserved promotion to take up a role at Stevenage as academy development lead coach, which he held for a year before taking the same role at Brighton & Hove Albion. Nevertheless in October 2023, he was tempted back to Hastings with the club now in the Isthmian League Premier. An impressive season followed with Agutter leading the U's to a 7th place finish before once again succeeding Adam Hinshelwood as the new Worthing manager for 2024/25. The Rebels came so close to gaining Agutter his first promotion as manager but eventually finish in 4th - one points off top spot - after leading the league for much of the run in. Such a disappointment was hard to overcome with Worthing beaten in the play offs for the 3rd season in a row to confirm their status as a National League South side again for the upcoming campaign.

MVP: Jack Spong

Top Goalscorer Prediction: Brad Dolaghan

Overall Thoughts: It has been a whirlwind few seasons for Worthing. Supporters have been treated to some sensational football with a promotion the only missing component. Manager Chris Agutter helped add more balance to Adam Hinshelwood's previously gung-ho side and as a result almost led the Rebels to the league title. Some have pointed to departures this summer meaning that Worthing will fall away this season but, aside from Danny Cashman, the Rebels' signings this summer have more than covered those players who have left. A key component will be how Coleman De-Graft fills the void left in attacking midfield. Capable of magic moments, the next challenge for the 27-year-old is to bring consistency to his game week in, week out. Defensively, the side have further strengthened whilst Brad Dolaghan has the potential to be the leading marksman in the division and potentially the next of Worthing's stars to eventually move up the divisions. With the culture of football embedded and most of the outfield squad who played under Agutter remaining, there is no reason why Worthing cannot be a prominent feature in the promotion race again, finally aiming to shift their 'nearly men' tag.

Prediction: In my opinion, Worthing's prospects have been underestimated in some quarters. Summer business has neatly supplemented what is already an excellent Rebels squad. Agutter will go close again but it will likely be another venture into the play offs.
