This is my 5th season of doing this and each season the preview tends to get a bit more traction so thank you to everybody who kindly reads and shares. I hope this year's version lives up to the same comprehensive detail from before. First of all, a look back at my predictions from last season. It certainly wasn't my best although I would guess that many people's pre-season thoughts from last year also went up in smoke.

Not my best year. I think a few of the bolder calls such as Hartlepool to underachieve and Barnet to be right in contention were rewarded. However, I looked too hard at the signing power of York, Oldham and Eastleigh last summer and went against my normal instinct of backing well-run, stable clubs such as Altrincham and Bromley. On the plus side, I chose three strong goal-scorers and predicted pretty well in terms of managers who would flatter to deceive. The moral of the story for this season's prediction is not to put too much weight on signings but more on the overall package of the club.
Anyway, let's get to this year's version now. I expect that my predictions may vary in comparison to you, the reader, such is the open nature of the league this year. Regardless though as to whether your final thoughts differ or not, the main objective of this preview is to help inform on the twenty four teams in the division. Squad brief: With three consecutive play off eliminators going to extra time, Braintree shocked Bath City, Chelmsford and Worthing with late winners to gain promotion to the National League last season. It has been all change over the summer for Angelo Harrop's men with key figureheads Joe Grimwood, Leon Davies, Alfie Payne, Jack Sims, Aaron Blair and Baris Altintop departing. Immediately the club have looked to recruit a blend of National League experience and those who are on the way up in their career. Eastleigh defenders Ryan Clampin and George Langston fit this mould with numerous senior seasons behind them at a young age alongside fellow signings Louis Lomas and Louie Annesley. Meanwhile, 35-year-old Jamal Fyfield will bring much needed experience to an entirely new defensive line this season. Behind them, following Jack Sims departure to Sutton, Jacob Knightbridge looks set to be the club's number one goalkeeper after signing on loan from Oxford United for six months.
In midfield, one of the few survivors from last season - Dominic Odusanya - will be hoping to keep his spot in the centre of the pitch although he will face fierce competition from impressive former Bromley man James Vennings, loan signing Matt Robinson and ex Colchester United youngster Marley Marshall-Miranda. Elsewhere, new winger Finlay Barnes, who struggled for minutes at York last season, will likely fill the void on the right, filled last season by loan departee Charlie Wakefield. The midfield quartet will likely be completed by left winger Chay Cooper, who had a short stint on loan at Hartlepool last season. Harrop's usual 4-4-2 formation previously saw Aaron Blair and Freddie Sears lead the line throughout the play offs. Yet, following Blair's surprise departure following contractual disagreements, another former Dagenham & Redbridge striker in Inih Effiong will instead be leading the line for the Iron this season. Harrop will be hoping the 33-year-old can replicate his impressive strike rate from the previous campaign where he prolifically struck more than a goal every two games. Alternatively, the club could decide to field fellow new signing John Akinde although the probability is that he will rotate with Effiong in a bid to preserve both of their fitness. A likely partner for either big man will come in the shape of former Southend striker Callum Powell or Kyrell Lisbie. In particular, Lisbie's fortunes this season will be intriguing to watch after scoring almost 30 goals for Isthmian league side Cray Valley Paper Mills last season, including a goal during a televised FA Cup replay against Charlton - his father Kevin's former side.
Manager: With a playing career mostly playing second fiddle to his managerial ambitions, Angelo Harrop has become one of non-league's most sought after managers. After various roles including coaching in the USA and becoming head scout role at one of Norwich FC's development centres, Harrop had short stints as manager of Stanway Rovers and Brightlingsea Regent. Nevertheless, it was his spell in joint charge of AFC Sudbury that brought him to the wider attention of those in the higher echelons of non-league. Harrop's Sudbury side managed to reach the first round of the FA Cup and thus drew neighbouring Colchester United - a fixture that would be played in front of the BBC cameras. Braintree Town moved for their man in the summer of 2022 and his first season saw The Iron beat the odds to make the play offs in 7th place. This set the platform for the club's 5th place finish last season where the 36-year-old guided his underdogs to promotion after a five year absence from the National League.
Unheralded Gem: Finlay Barnes - Despite a move to convoluted York City not working out, Barnes still managed to impress on loan at Scarborough last season. With an excellent left foot, the 23-year-old likes to cut in off the right flank and will be one of the main supply lines for Inih Effiong.
Top Goalscorer Prediction: Inih Effiong
Overall Thoughts: It has been all change this summer at Braintree as the club try to come to terms with the ultra competitive division that they now find themselves in. Angelo Harrop's side have switched to full-time training and as a result have recruited players used to these demands. Business was conducted early in the transfer window and importantly a proven goalscorer at this level in Effiong was acquired. Nevertheless, his fitness will be imperative to The Iron's hopes with the powerhouse striker only making 28 appearances last season. It is rare for a promoted side to rip up a squad that succeeded but this is what Braintree have done and it does carry a risk of unfamiliarity that could stall the momentum built in recent years. As a result, Braintree are an absolute wildcard. Will the experienced players signed contain the motivation to fight for the club? Will those signings shunned by other clubs be able to live up to the potential that they have? Angelo Harrop up to now has proved an excellent decision maker and he will be confident that this group of Braintree players will have the required ingredients to be competitive thus giving themselves an excellent chance of securing a second season in the National League.
Prediction: There will be tough weeks ahead but I do think Braintree have signed an effective blend of National League stalwarts that have at least one more strong season in them and players who need a platform to showcase their talents. Guided by an shrewd manager in Angelo Harrop, I would be surprised if they were relegated and on reflection, I may well have even placed them too low.

Squad brief: Following a solid season where they finished in 6th place, Boston upset the odds in the play offs by progressing through three away matches in a row to take their place in the National League for the first time in twenty two years. It certainly wasn't a perfect season for manager Ian Culverhouse with thirteen defeats and being twenty one points off champions Tamworth but like Kidderminster the season before, the Pilgrims found their form when it mattered. The immediate priority in the close season was for Boston to retain their key assets and they have done this partially with the likes of goalkeeper Cameron Gregory, the experienced centre back Michael Bostwick, right back Jai Rowe, young midfielder Dylan Hill and attacking midfielder Keaton Ward re-signing. Nevertheless, the loss of top goalscorers Kelsey Mooney and Jimmy Knowles are blows for Boston although arguably their numbers last season were skewed slightly with purple patches as opposed to scoring consistently over a forty-six game period.
Their departures give The Pilgrims an opportunity to bring in National League calibre strikers and the signing of Adam Marriott may just be that. Having previously excelled under Ian Culverhouse at Kings Lynn, Marriott is certainly in the twilight of his career but may just prove to be the poacher that Boston require to keep their points total ticking over. Derby County striker Tony Weston has also been signed on loan for the season with the 20-year-old looking to prove himself at senior level. Elsewhere, full back Brad Nicholson is a disappointing departure after often providing the width from the left to supplement Culverhouse's diamond setup. New signing Cameron Green from Welling will hope to step into his shoes and possesses an equally attacking mindset. Furthermore, one of the more interesting signings Culverhouse has made is former Altrincham and Southend winger Dan Mooney. At his best, the 25-year-old has the potential to be one of the best players in the division but struggled to recapture his earlier Altrincham form at the Shrimpers. With Culverhouse tending to not play out and out wingers, it will be interesting to see if Mooney will be deployed in a front two or perhaps just off a main striker.
Manager: Following an successful playing career largely at Norwich City, Ian Culverhouse's initial coaching career saw him take up youth team positions at Barnet, Leyton Orient and Wycombe before becoming Assistant Manager to Paul Lambert at Colchester, Norwich and Aston Villa. In 2017, Culverhouse became a manager in his own right at Kings Lynn Town. A brief swap for Grantham Town in 2018 was unsuccessful but upon his return to Kings Lynn, promotion was gained to the National League North in 2019. During the COVID suspended season, the side were second but subsequently promoted due to the points per game system and took their place in the National League for the 2021/22 season. However, Culverhouse's only stint to date at this level was a disaster as he was sacked in November with his side only winning two matches. A forgettable stint as manager of Kettering followed before his appointment at Boston in September 2022. His first season in charge saw consolidation with a 15th place finish in the National League North before last season's improvement to 6th and promotion via the play offs.
Unheralded Gem: Dylan Hill - Signed last season as a 19-year-old from Northampton, Dylan Hill soon established himself as a key first team player in Boston's promotion campaign. Possessing relentless energy and an excellent ball carrying ability, Hill's work rate beautifully supplemented the calm demeanour of veteran Martin Woods alongside him.
Top Goalscorer Prediction: Adam Marriott
Overall Thoughts: A surprise return to the National League via the play offs has left Boston United with quite a job to ensure their squad is ready for the demands of this season. A hybrid training model somewhere between part and full time means they have had to target a specific calibre of player this summer. Culverhouse likes to play a relatively narrow formation with his full backs roaming high to supply crosses into the two strikers but it is worth noting that the manager's previous stint in this division did not go well and it will be interesting to see what lessons he has learnt from that. The experience of Martin Woods and Michael Bostwick will be imperative for The Pilgrims but both may struggle against the greater off the ball movement in this division. Overall, with a fair few summer assets leaving and replacements mostly being those who have done well in the division below, Boston do look a little undercooked for the challenge ahead and ultimately it would be a surprise if they were to stay up, especially considering they were not standouts in the division below last season.
Prediction: I do believe there may be a managerial change midway through the season here as I am tipping Boston to get off to a difficult start. The Pilgrims' squad looks more befitting of a National League North side and there are echoes of Kidderminster from last season in terms of promoting a little too soon. Relegation beckons.

Squad brief: With three different managers across nine months, Eastleigh's previous campaign was a near disaster with numerous marquee signings yet a narrow escape from relegation. Although there has been a significant clear out, there are still remnants of last summer's handouts of two year deals remaining whilst intriguingly the club has looked to move on several promising young defenders such as Oscar Rutherford, George Langston and Brennan Camp. With the second worst defensive record in the league last season, the Spitfires have moved to sign experienced Notts County promotion winner Richard Brindley, who can play at centre back or out on the right. Furthermore, Hampton & Richmond Player's Player of the Season Luis Fernandez has also joined and the 22-year-old will likely join six-foot-four Ludwig Francillette and Corey Panter in a back three. Elsewhere, Jake Vokins, who had a successful loan spell last season, has joined permanently and will take up the left wing back position.
With Jake Taylor, Solomon Nwabuokei and Lee Hodson remaining, manager Kelvin Davis has looked to add technical quality to the centre of midfield with acclaimed technician Lloyd Humphries signing from Weston Super Mare whilst young former Brentford B midfielder Angel Waruih has also joined. Last season, the side were often criticised for their lack of pace and Davis will hope the signings of Tyrese Shade and Deji Sotana will fix this issues. Shade, in particular, was a regular on loan at play off finalists Solihull Moors across the last fifteen games and impressed with his energetic displays although his actual output did come under scrutiny. Unsurprisingly, Eastleigh have not made any amendments to their strike-force since they hold last season's top goalscorer in Paul McCallum. The 30-year-old smashed in 31 goals and built an effective partnership with former promotion winner Scott Quigley, who also reached double figures. Perhaps the club's trump card is former Scottish international Chris Maguire. The ex-Sunderland man managed 12 goals also last season from varying positions around the front line. Quite where they position him to get the best output overall from the team though is the conundrum that Kelvin Davis needs to solve this season.
Manager: It's fair to say that Kelvin Davis is a bit of an unknown in the world of football management. Following a playing career best known for a ten year spell as goalkeeper at Southampton, Davis originally had a short stint on the club's Board of Directors after his retirement. The 47-year-old then served as Assistant Manager for five years to Mauricio Pellegrino, Mark Hughes and Ralph Hasenhuttl. Equipped with a UEFA Pro License, Eastleigh came calling after suffering a terrible run of form in February of this year, yet Davis steadied the ship with six wins from the club's remaining thirteen games.
Unheralded Gem: Lloyd Humphries - Fresh from securing Weston Super Mare's Supporter's Player of the Season award last season, Humphries will be hoping to show off his technical prowess in the heart of Eastleigh's midfield. An excellent ball player, Humphries will likely be deployed just in front of the back four where he will look to control possession for the Spitfires.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Paul McCallum
Overall Thoughts: For a number of seasons now, Eastleigh have drifted along varying from upper to lower mid table. It is hard to pinpoint how Eastleigh will get on this season due to Davis' unknown quantity as a football manager; however, a worry must be the club's poor home record under the new manager with sixteen goals conceded from seven games which saw only one win secured. Really, Eastleigh only secured survival last season by uncharacteristically gritting out four consecutive 1-0 away victories against their relegation rivals when it mattered most. Over an entire season, questions have to be asked of the makeup of the side. It appears during pre-season that Eastleigh are setting up with a 3-5-2 formation looking likely despite the recruitment of wingers Tyrese Shade and Deji Sotona. Whether they will be adapted into wing backs during the season remains to be seen but the signals as to exactly what Eastleigh want to do are certainly mixed. Also, whilst Paul McCallum may have a sensational goal record, his inability to press from the front alongside chief creator Chris Maguire often sets the tempo for a team that are not renowned for their mobility over the pitch. In particular, the midfield area was often a problem last season with Jake Taylor, Lee Hodson, Solomon Nwabuokei and Chris Maguire often failing to stamp their control on a game. Resultingly, there is a huge onus on Lloyd Humphries to aid The Spitfires in better protecting a defence that conceded 87 goals last season. As good a technician as he is, current thoughts are that more surgery is required on a squad that last season showed a severe soft touch for much of the campaign.
Prediction: It is an incredibly hard league to call but I have too many concerns over Eastleigh's squad, philosophy and unproven manager to predict any success this season. In fact, I'm going to stick my neck out and predict that their years of drifting will catch up with them. Sadly, I think Kelvin Davis will be one of the first casualties of the new season despite only recently signing a three year contract at the club. Relegation.

Squad brief: Fresh off signing a new two year deal, manager Andy Peaks must be pinching himself at Tamworth's rapid rise that has taken them from the Southern Premier League to National League in the space of two years. Despite possessing a ridiculous defensive record of only 29 goals conceded last season, Peaks has made further additions to his defence, including prioritising a partner for Jordan Cullinane-Liburd. Experienced National League North campaigner Kennedy Digie has joined as has Haydn Hollis from recently relegated Dorking Wanderers. The latter, who counts Forest Green, Chesterfield and Notts County amongst his former clubs, is a left footer and would provide balance across a backline, which also includes impressive full backs Matt Curley and Callum Cockerill-Mollett. Furthermore, after six seasons with the Lambs, goalkeeper Jas Singh makes his return to the National League more than ten years since his last appearance in the division with Kidderminster.
In midfield, captain Jack Milnes will aim to retain his spot at the heart of the team and will aim to rekindle his partnership with either long-throw specialist Tom Tonks or February acquisition Munashe Sundire - a player with a season in the National League to call upon from his time at Kings Lynn in 2022. Further reinforcements have been sought in this area though with the arrivals of Kai Lissimore and Rushall Olympic Player of the Season Alex Fletcher. In the three behind the lone striker, mazy dribbler Ben Acquaye and prolific Kyle Finn will expect to start in the wide positions after impressive seasons in the club's title winning effort whilst Nathan Tshikuna will likely continue as the most advanced of the central midfield trio. Up front, Dan Creaney, fresh from thirty plus goals in the Southern Premier League, found the National League North a trickier prospect last season with a return of nine goals. He will face a fight to maintain his starting position with the addition of Miracle Okafor and Chris Wreh to the ranks. The former - a 23-year-old who scored 21 times for Halesowen Town last season - has seen Peaks take a gamble that he is able to make the jump to Step one football. Wreh, however, is a familiar name to Lambs fans after six goals from 18 appearances whilst on-loan last season. However, it is worth saying that the former Hartlepool and Southend man has struggled for goals in the National League over the past two seasons.
Manager: With a largely non-league playing career, Andy Peaks spent the majority of his days in the late 90s/early 00s at Rushden & Diamonds and Stamford FC. The former also become his first managerial job in 2013, in the guise of AFC Rushden & Diamonds, where he was to remain for nine years. At The Diamonds, Peaks guided the club to three promotions in six years from the United Counties 2nd division to the Southern Premier Division. His time at the club saw him retain a win percentage of 60% over more than 200 games. With his achievements noticed by others in the division, fellow Southern Premier side Tamworth approached Peaks in mid 2022 and the manager took them on a 14 game unbeaten run to ensure their survival in the division. The rest is history with Tamworth winning the Southern Premier League in 2022/23 and following this up with a National League North triumph in 2023/24 - Peaks' 5th promotion in just over ten years as a manager.
Unheralded Gem: Kyle Finn - Deployed mostly on the right, Finn hit 14 goals in Tamworth's unexpected surge to the title last season. The Irish winger regularly moves inside into central areas when the full back is high and has profited with some excellent left footed finishes.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Chris Wreh
Overall Thoughts: Back-to-back promotions for Tamworth have seen them leap back into the National League for the first time in ten seasons. Success last season was built on a stunning defensive record that only saw 29 league goals conceded with goalkeeper Jas Singh and defenders Matt Curley and Jordan Cullinane-Liburd subsequently named in the National League North Team of the Season. Summer signings have been sensible with Andy Peaks retaining the bulk of his title winning squad and using his knowledge and contacts to add talents from step 2 and below. The side's approach is not necessarily pretty to watch but the 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation is well-drilled as you would expect from a team that kept 25 clean sheets on their way to a league title. Unlike Oxford City, who were far too open at times last season, Tamworth will be ready to frustrate and take advantage of any side that is off their game with their physical approach. Nevertheless, you have to wonder if the club's sudden success has arrived a year too soon for them to properly compete in the National League. With full-time sides in the league regularly signing experienced Football League players nowadays, Tamworth's part-time model is refreshing but is perhaps going to leave them short of the vital experience that is necessary at this level. I expect there will be numerous occasions where the Lambs upset the odds with their resolute, hard-working approach bearing fruit. Ultimately though, an instant return to the National League North, in which they are better set up to compete in at this moment in time, will likely beckon.
Prediction: The jump from step 2 to step 1 is huge at present. I fully expect Tamworth to be gritty, robust and ready to frustrate anybody who does not score early against them but the worry it that there does seem to be a distinct lack of goals in their squad which I fear will catch up with them over the season. Plucky, but relegated.

Squad brief: All change at Wealdstone last season with the exit of Stuart Maynard to Notts County in January. Lying in 12th at the time of his departure, the Stones promptly dropped like one and were in real relegation peril when replacement David Noble was sacked after only three months in the job. First team coach Sam Cox oversaw three wins in his five games in interim charge to help Wealdstone escape the drop but he was not rewarded with the job permanently. Instead, that honour went to ex Portsmouth and Bolton player Matt Taylor. The new manager has immediately had to cope with some inevitable departures as star centre back Charlie Barker joined League One Crawley Town whilst wide players Tarryn Allarakhia and Dillon De Silva joined other clubs in the National League. Goalkeeper Marcus Dewhurst also secured a move to Aldershot and Taylor has chosen to replace him with Archie Matthews, who has not made many senior appearances despite a number of loan spells around non-league. The club do have a number of options in front of their young goalkeeper, even with Barker's departure. Long-serving centre backs Jack Cook and Mason Barrett are experienced at this level and have been joined by new signings Deon Woodman and 37-year-old Adrian Mariappa. Experience appears to be a priority for Taylor as he also swooped to secure Sutton's long-serving captain in Craig Eaastmond. The 33-year-old will likely partner Alex Dyer or fellow new signing Elliot Simmons in the middle of the pitch.
With a few departures in the wide areas, reinforcements in these zones have been the major priority over the summer to prepare for whether the Stones stick with their pre-season wing back system or revert back to a 4-2-3-1. Former Notts County and Eastleigh winger Enzio Boldewijn should provide some trickery from either the right or left whilst Todd Miller will add raw speed from the opposite flank. A wing back system however may see Anthony Georgiou deputise on the left in place of the injured Jayden Mundle-Smith whilst Kallum Cesay or possibly the aforementioned Boldewijn could start on the right. Up front, Sam Ashford previously scored ten goals for Hemel Hempstead in the National League South numerous years ago but has since plied his trade in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The 28-year-old may play alongside, although it is unlikely he will displace, Sean Adarkwa who hit ten goals recently in his debut National League season. Nevertheless, 19-year-old loan striker Henry Sandat, who made his debut for Southend aged just 17, will be hoping for an impressive spell to confirm his burgeoning potential.
Manager: Well-known through his Premier League stints at Portsmouth, Bolton and West Ham, Matt Taylor ended his playing career at Swindon Town where he got a brief taste of management in a player/coach role during his final season. Afterwards, Taylor spent two years learning his trade at Tottenham U18s before securing the manager's job at Walsall in 2021. Despite a promising start, Taylor did not last the season as a bad run of results took the club to just outside the relegation zone. Nevertheless, he was appointed by Shrewsbury Town at the beginning of last season but once again only lasted for half a season before being dismissed after a poor run of results. Following Wealdstone's tough end to the 23/24 campaign, the club appointed Taylor in the hope that he can take up the mantle left by Stuart Maynard.
Unheralded Gem: Sean Adarkwa - Although his form dipped towards the end of last season, the former Arbroath man has the potential to really catch the eye if he gets going quickly. As an excellent athlete who is technically sound, Adarkwa has the raw ingredients and growing experience to potentially trouble the top end of the goalscoring charts if given the right service. Wealdstone's biggest battle this season may be keeping hold of the 23-year-old until the season's conclusion.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Sean Adarkwa
Overall Thoughts: For several seasons now, Wealdstone have defied the drop but this year will be their biggest challenge yet with more full time clubs than ever and a new manager at the helm. Matt Taylor has reverted the club to a hybrid model of training and has looked for a blend of potential talents and experienced campaigners nearing the end of their career. Undoubtedly, the club will have to rely on loan talents to supplement the squad as they have done in previous years. Sam Bowen was an excellent loan addition to the centre of midfield last season but his absence this season exposes a midfield that is aging in places and very raw looking in others whilst Tahvon Campbell helped relieve the goalscoring burden on Adarkwa earlier last campaign. Signings to date though have been mixed with the coup of a regular League Two starter in Craig Eastmond but Enzio Boldewijn is known to be very inconsistent whilst Sam Ashford and Henry Sandat are not known for being prolific at this level. Another area of concern has to be with the goalkeeper. Marcus Dewhurst had his critics amongst Stones fans but Archie Matthews' will need to defy his lack of senior experience in the opening weeks of the season or supporters will be calling for a replacement. And with a manager who has failed in his two senior appointments to date, it does look like it will be another tough season battling against the drop for Wealdstone.
Prediction: Some predictions do tend to write themselves and I am sure Wealdstone will be written off in the majority of pre-season previews. Even so, I was impressed with the siege mentality that the Stones showed at the end of last season and they possess some key experience that is tailor made for a relegation battle. A season that will go to the wire again, except this time I think the club may just fall the wrong side of the line.

Squad brief: Following 82 points the previous year, Woking went into last season as one of the favourites for the title but it all went so horribly wrong with the club almost relegated. The Cards massively overspent in the summer and a bloated squad full of injury prone players only clenched mathematical safety on the final day of the campaign. Manager Michael Doyle should take most of the credit for achieving 30 points from his 23 matches in charge. The former Notts County midfielder has trimmed the squad enormously with some big names leaving over the summer such as Ricky Korboa, Rhys Browne and Scott Cuthbert. Yet still, owner Drew Volpe recently announced that he has had to put up £600,000 to stop the club going into administration and that he is actively looking for a buyer to avoid a repeat threat down the line.
Nevertheless, Doyle has still been able to reshape the squad with numerous incomings, mostly in the defence. Cuthbert's departure alongside Luke Wilkinson, Greg Taylor, Josh Casey and Sam Habergham has paved the way for five signings at the back. Doyle has moved for familiarity with Max Dyche and Timi Odusina returning after effective loan spells last season. Left wing back Jacob Jones joins to take up the spot vacated by departing club captain Josh Casey whilst the arrival of Cian Harries may be seen as somewhat of a coup from local rivals Aldershot. Finally, Ben Wynter has been signed from Barnet and will likely compete for a spot on the right side of the defence. Speaking of the Bees, former Barnet club captain Dale Gorman has also arrived to provide some much needed leadership in the centre of midfield and he will be joined by Jamie Andrews, who played a fair amount for Grimsby in League Two last season. Goals were a problem for Woking last season and the signing of Harry Beautyman, who has hit double figures from attacking midfield on five occasions in his career, should help take the pressure off the front two of Lewis Walker and Charley Kendall.
Manager: Michael Doyle's esteemed Football League career spans over 650 appearances - most notably for Coventry City and Sheffield United in the Championship and League One. A League Two title triumph in midfield for Portsmouth in 2017 was followed by promotion from the League Two Play Offs in his second spell at Coventry in 2018. Doyle will be most recently known to lower league supporters for his spell at Notts County in the National League where he ended his playing career in 2021, gaining valuable experience as Assistant Coach in the process. In 2022, Doyle joined ex Notts County manager Ian Burchnall as Assistant Manager at Forest Green Rovers before moving to a role within Portsmouth's youth academy in 2023. Following Woking's disastrous start to last season, Doyle was appointed manager in December 2023 with the club falling down the table fast. By the end of the season, he had guided the club to survival by three points.
Unheralded Gem: Dale Gorman - It feels like the 28-year-old has been around for much longer with a career that has seen him impress at Leyton Orient, Yeovil and Barnet. The central midfielder is an excellent passer of the ball and covers a lot of ground through his excellent work ethic. Likely to be on set pieces, expect him to be near the top of the assist charts this season.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Harry Beautyman
Overall Thoughts: After last season's tumultuous campaign, Woking have faced a huge rebuild and now possess a squad unrecognisable from 12 months ago. The experienced heads of Scott Cuthbert, Jim Kellermann and Josh Casey amongst others have departed as have some of the impressive mid-season short-term acquisitions such as Jayden Luker, Kevin Berkoe and Curtis Edwards. With an unsurprising budget reduction, the squad is thin in places with out of favour Rohan Ince a constant reminder of the club's former misspending habits. Signings altogether have been steady, especially in the midfield where Dale Gorman will add real solidity and Harry Beautyman should provide a few extra goals from just behind the strikers. However, concerns have to be raised regarding the team's overall firepower with neither Charley Kendall or Lewis Walker showing any prolificacy in front of goal in the National League to date. Furthermore, three quarters of the club's well-established defence that only conceded 55 goals last season has moved on. In its place are a few less experienced players and Cian Harries - a defender more renowned for his ball playing ability than defensive prowess. All in all, the situation reminds me of Dagenham & Redbridge a year ago following mass departures, ownership issues and a very new squad of players. Ultimately, this should be regarded as a transitional season for Woking where any better should see Michael Doyle lauded.
Prediction: I fear for Woking this season. It is not easy to undergo a transitional season at the best of times but with huge improvements in the calibre of the division, the club have to be wary of another tough campaign, especially with a blunt looking strike force. Survival, but a struggle.

Squad brief: A dominant display in the National League South last season saw Yeovil Town win the division by 11 points and gain an instant re-promotion to the National League. The experienced Mark Cooper has looked to tailor the squad towards the demands of the division with two new goalkeepers joining in Matt Gould from Altrincham and Ollie Wright on loan from Southampton. Competition for the gloves will be fierce with last season's main starter Will Buse still at the club. In defence, Jake Wannell made the National League South Team of the Season but the arrival of Finn Cousin-Dawson from Bradford will see a battle between the two and Morgan Williams for the two central defensive spots. The same could be said for veteran right back Michael Smith, who will likely rotate with former Barnet full back Jordan Thomas - signed from Hampton & Richmond - whereas Alex Whittle should have the left back slot nailed down.
In midfield, captain Matt Worthington will likely command one of the two central spots with manager's son Charlie Cooper competing for the other with ball player Brett McGavin, who was snapped up from Torquay. Elsewhere, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton possesses a vast range of experience at the age of just 21 and may play behind the front man whilst Dylan Morgan and Sam Pearson will look to lock down positions wide of the striker. With bad memories of their previous campaign at National League level, the Glovers will be aiming to avoid the mistakes that led to relegation where they only managed 35 goals with a toothless attack. Alex Fisher, Rhys Murphy, Jake Hyde and Malachi Linton's release over the summer has opened space in the squad for the arrival of Torquay target man Aaron Jarvis and 20-year-old Harvey Greenslade. Both will compete with Frank Nouble and last season's top goalscorer Jordan Young for starting spots in the side's attack.
Manager: Following a near twenty year playing career, Mark Cooper moved into a player/manager role at Tamworth in 2004 where he made a name for himself by reaching the third round of the FA Cup in consecutive seasons. Nevertheless, he left the club in 2007 following poor league form yet repeated his FA Cup trick for new club Kettering in 2009 with the club reaching the 4th round on this occasion. With his exploits noticed, he soon became manager of then Championship side Peterborough, yet his tenure only last for 13 matches before he was sacked. Since then, Cooper's managerial career has yo-yoed somewhat with short spells at Darlington, AFC Telford and Swindon - where he made the League One Play Off final. A further spell at Forest Green Rovers was to be his longest in charge of a club to date and one of his most successful after the club were promoted from the National League under his stewardship. An unsuccessful spell at Barrow followed before Cooper took charge at Yeovil in October 2022. Despite being unable to keep the club in the National League, the 55-year-old led them to the National League South title at the first time of asking.
Unheralded Gem: Dylan Morgan - Aged just 21, Morgan had forced his way into the Yeovil starting line-up by the end of the season after signing in January from Taunton Town. With three goals in the final two matches of last season and a handful of goals in pre-season, the wide man may just use the National League as his platform to showcase his superb dribbling skills in from the left side.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Aaron Jarvis
Overall Thoughts: Yeovil's efficient return to the National League was achieved with minimum fuss as the club set about establishing themselves as contenders in the National League once again. Many of the young players who initially dropped out of the division have another year of experience behind them and signings have also been brought in with an eye on the future rather than journeymen looking for one last pay cheque. As league champions last season, Yeovil unusually did not have a player within the top ten goalscorers of the division. 14 goal Jordan Young was the team's highest returnee as the Glovers split their 81 league goals throughout the team. Inevitably with promotion, that ratio will drop and it will be interesting to see if Yeovil can score enough between their offensive players as the club does not look to solely rely on one lead marksman. It has to be added that Yeovil's last time in this division was tainted by infighting between Mark Cooper and prospective owner at the time Matt Uggla. Martin Hellier is now chairman and, although his investment has been significant, some of his controversial antics have caused distractions on occasions for the fanbase with even Cooper himself commenting on the noise around the club. In what is an incredibly tough division, the last thing the Glovers need is another season of off the field drama.
Prediction: The gap between step 1 and 2 appears to be forever growing with all four promoted sides struggling last season. I think history will repeat itself this season although I do think Yeovil look more secure than Ebbsfleet and Oxford City did last year. Whilst I do not think they will be relegated, I certainly think the level within the division may surprise a few supporters after a season away. Survival and a potential push into lower mid-table.

Squad brief: For the first time in what feels like a long time, Aldershot come into a new season with real optimism after an excellent campaign where they missed out on the play offs by just two points. Tommy Widdrington, supported well by acclaimed Head of Recruitment Jamie Hedges, was able to give the likes of Josh Stokes and Lorent Tolaj, amongst others, a platform to showcase their talents. It is no surprise that the duo have gained Football League moves off the back of excellent seasons. Armed with his trusty wing back system, Widdrington has set about filling the holes left not just by Stokes and Tolaj but also by the departing Haji Mnoga, Kwame Thomas, Ryan Glover and Cian Harries. Defence was the Shots achilles heel last season with 83 goals conceded and Widdrington has moved to secure a new goalkeeper in Marcus Dewhurst and defensive reinforcements in the shape of Luke Jenkins and Lachlan Byrd. The pair will likely compete with Christian Maghoma and the ever trusty Ollie Harfield for starting spots in the back three. At wing back, Tyler Frost will likely continue in the right wing back role that he impressed in last season whilst new signing Ryan Jones will likely replace the departing Glover on the opposite flank.
In central midfield, Widdrington has put his faith in young lower league prospects with Cameron Hargreaves signed from the manager's former club Kings Lynn and the highly rated Emmanuel Maja joining from Banbury United. Nevertheless, one of his best acquisitions of the summer may well be a re-signing in the shape of Dejan Tetek. It will be imperative to keep the Serbian midfielder fit as Aldershot lost only two of his eleven starts last season. Meanwhile, the question on many supporters' lips might well be how the club could possibly replace Josh Stokes. The answer could well come from within the squad in the shape of Josh Barrett. The 26-year-old, who had previously excelled under Widdrington at Kings Lynn, joined in January last season and showed flashes of his quality behind the strikers towards the end of last season. Elsewhere, young attacking midfielder Haydon Vaughan will be another that the club will look to develop whilst, at the other end of the spectrum, the signing of 35-year-old James Henry from Oxford caught everybody unaware. With over 90 goals and a career that has never seen him play below League One level, Henry could be a superb addition as a right central option in Aldershot's attack. Up front, Kai Corbett has been the sole addition this summer and he will likely partner Jack Barham with Hady Ghandour currently the first backup choice.
Manager: Best known for his playing days at Southampton in the early 1990s, Tommy Widdrington has had a varied managerial career. His first experience of managing a National League club was in 2009 when Widdrington became player/manager of Salisbury City, yet his time was short lived as the club entered administration soon after. Five years in charge of Eastbourne Borough from 2012-17 is his longest reign as a manager whilst his most recent year and a half in charge of King's Lynn was his most successful spell in management with the side fighting for promotion before he left to take the Aldershot Town post. Widdrington successfully kept the Shots up in his first season and finished narrowly outside the play off positions in his second.
Unheralded Gem: Luke Jenkins - A right-centre-back who starred for Chelmsford in the National League South last season and who subsequently received an England C call up. Although a good defender, Jenkins fits perfectly into the mould of a player who can progress the ball up the pitch, particularly with his pinpoint long diagonal passes that enable a side to switch play quickly.
Top Goal-Scorer Prediction: Kai Corbett
Overall Thoughts: It has become common place to predict Aldershot as relegation troublers but last season broke the mould and Aldershot's current recruitment strategy makes it likely that they will be competing strongly again this season. Nevertheless, very few other teams have been decimated over the summer quite like the Shots have been. When half of your strongest eleven from the previous season have left, it puts real pressure on the recruitment to be accurate - luckily Aldershot have developed into one of the better sides in the division at finding untapped talent. Many of their new signings fall into that unknown bracket and it could well be that this current side, put together by Tommy Widdrington, could well exceed the previous. But it does have to be mentioned that as good as Aldershot were at times last season, they still encountered some difficult periods during the season where some of their young stars momentarily went off the boil, which subsequently resulted in them missing out on a top seven spot. Altogether the defence looks stronger in terms of personnel, I think the way in which Aldershot play will see them concede an above average amount of goals regardless. With the offensive players and mountains of goals that they have lost, I think it will be difficult for them to better last season.
Prediction: With their seriously impressive recruitment across the last eighteen months, one key questions sticks in my mind. Can the Shots get it spot on again? I think they can. Overall, I think the Shots looked more rounded than last season with less reliance on a handful of players. I still think it will be a tough ask to make the play offs with many candidates in the frame but I certainly think the Shots are capable of being in the group that could take advantage if others falter.

Squad brief: Unsurprisingly, last season proved one of transition for the Daggers although there were some bright points along the way for Ben Strevens side. The opening half of the campaign proved tricky with the club hovering around the relegation zone but improved performances in 2024 saw the side manage 31 points from their final 23 games, scoring 45 goals along the way during this period. With a recent takeover by the North Sixth Group, led by Matt Rizzetta, and a new Sporting Director in James King, signings have been more free-flowing this summer. Nevertheless, the team have still lost some of their key players from last season with joint top goalscorer Inih Effiong leaving for Braintree and defender Nikola Tavares choosing to move to Barnet. The hole left by Tavares has been immediately plugged though with Paul Kalambayi joining from AFC Wimbledon and Trent Rendall arriving from QPR. The release of Josh Hare came as a relative surprise to Daggers supporters but it enabled the club to move for 20-year-old right sided prospect Oscar Rutherford. Meanwhile, on the opposite side, Elliott Johnson was released after four seasons with the club leaving Frank Vincent as Strevens' preferred choice at left back.
With star loan signing Keenan Appiah Forson now departed, the Daggers moved quickly to sign Christian N'Guessan, who was named in the National League South Team of the Season in 2022/23, to bolster their midfield ranks. Nevertheless, it is in the forward areas in which the Daggers have conducted the most business after an overreliance on Inih Effiong last season. Options up front now come in the form of Josh Umerah, Reece Grego-Cox, Dylan Stephenson and the returning Junior Morias. The latter's 21 goals previously at the Daggers earnt him a move to Notts County where he now returns from on loan for six months. With the exception of Umerah, all of the striking options can also play in the wide attacking areas which will provide excellent competition for Shiloh Remy, Ryan Hill and the returning Dion Pereira, who has rejoined the club on a year-long loan following an exciting spell during the second half of last season. The club are also looking to introduce a development group, which could prove dividends for the future, where existing talents such as 18-year-old Alfie Terry alongside new signings Harrison Day and Ralph Vigrass will head out on loan in search of valuable first team experience.
Manager: Once a key part of their side historically promoted to the Football League, Ben Strevens returned to manage the Daggers in March 2023. Previously a striker with a high work ethic, Strevens' previous side Eastleigh was built in this mould and managed to make the play offs during his three year reign. Having left the Spitfires early in 2022, Strevens took some time out of the game and did some coaching work in the Luton Town academy before a return to National League management beckoned. In his first full season in charge of the Daggers, Strevens led the side through a tough transition to 15th place with 56 points.
Unheralded Gem: Ryan Hill - After a frustrating injury ravaged spell at Eastleigh, Hill shone during his debut season for the Daggers last season with eleven goals from his 32 games. With the ability to press hard from the front, Hill proved that he was not just a menace to defenders but could also add the finishing touch in front of goal.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Josh Umerah
Overall Thoughts: Ben Strevens provided a calm head to lead Dagenham & Redbridge through a difficult period last season and now gets the opportunity to show that he can lead a challenge at the right end of the table. The Daggers were rarely out of a match last season but lacked the depth within their forward options to regularly change a game as shown by a home record that includes twelve defeats - eight of which were by just one goal. Strevens' men fared better on the road but eleven draws further indicated the side's inability to be cutthroat later in matches. All in all though, it proves that the Daggers were not too far away from getting it right. Summer signings have added the necessary depth in the attacking areas and undoubtedly the loan market will be used throughout the season to cover any other positions should injuries occur. One question mark over the Daggers summer business however are the injury records of some of their signings - particularly Reece Grego-Cox, Josh Umerah and Paul Kalambayi. Nevertheless, depth in these areas now suggests that these are risks that the Daggers can afford to take. Strevens choosing to go into the season without a specialist left back however certainly highlights a show of faith in Frank Vincent but it would not be a surprise to see opponents target this aspect of the Daggers team. Mind you, if the Daggers are to compete around the top positions, they will have to become less generous to their opponents what with only seven clean sheets kept in the whole of last season.
Prediction: Signs are good for the Daggers this season: new owners with history of developing lower league football clubs around the world and a deeper squad full of National League experience. However, I think they are just short currently in central midfield with a significant drop off in quality after Jake Hessenthaler and Christian N'Guessan. An injury free and consistent Connor Lawless or another gem found within the loan market is required if Daggers want to progress from beyond that cluster of teams hunting for the final play off places.

In midfield, the experienced Josh Wright will likely continue to patrol the central areas and will be joined by the experienced Jim Kellermann following Billy Clifford's departure to Barnet. Last season, Toby Edser was one of the shining lights for Ebbsfleet and he will now have competition for his spot at the tip of the midfield with the addition of Wes Fonguck from Southend. Within the side's 3-5-2 formation, Ebbsfleet have the luxury of picking from various strikers, including new signing Kwame Thomas who scored numerous important goals for Aldershot as an impact sub last season. Dominic Poleon is also fresh off of a 16 goal season whilst Rakesh Bingham returned from a long-term injury to also score seven times during the final few months. Furthermore, the experienced Dominic Samuel joined the club last October and could be a real danger to opposition defences with a full pre-season now behind him. Finally, do not discount Nathan Odokonyero; the 21-year-old joined a year ago after bagging a ton of goals at Step 3 level. A relegation battle was probably not the scene for him to excel in last season but a loan spell at Tonbridge Angels where he converted nine goals in fourteen games was a reminder to all that he could force his way into Searle's first team plans this season.
Manager: Danny Searle's coaching career of over twenty years has seen him rise up the ranks from development coach at Chelsea to manager of Ebbsfleet with a few interesting stops along the way. After spending many years working with various academies, Searle took the Braintree Town Assistant Manager job in 2018 and subsequently took over as manager in 2019. Shortly after, he was made Aldershot Town manager following the departure of Gary Waddock and, despite budget restraints, repeatedly kept the club in the National League until he was sacked in 2021. Searle then became manager at League of Ireland side Waterford FC before joining Czech club Banik Ostrava as Assistant Manager in June 2023. Nevertheless, the Romford born manager returned to England in February 2024 to take over as Ebbsfleet manager where he kept the side in the National League on the final day of the season.
Unheralded Gem: Jephte Tanga - As a 19-year-old last season, Jephte Tanga wowed the Welling and Maidstone fanbases with his fearless and exciting dribbling ability. Quick and direct, Tanga is also versatile and impressively completed the majority of matches last season despite his young age. Likely to be deployed in a wing back role, expect Tanga to be positioned high ready to take on opposing full backs.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Dominic Poleon
Overall Thoughts: Following an approach far too open for the National League under Dennis Kutrieb, Danny Searle provided stability and solidity when he arrived last season. With a number of impressive signings over the summer, there is talk of perhaps a play off push this coming season. To achieve this, Ebbsfleet will badly need to improve their away form, which was the second worst in the division last season. Also they will need to score more, as despite some impressive names up front, the Fleet only managed 59 goals across the season. In particular, I expect to see Ebbsfleet as a much bigger threat from set pieces considering the height in their squad, which could add an extra 5-10 goals to their tally. It will be important for the Fleet to mix it up however as their style was rather one dimensional at times, signalled even further by only one win in the final seven games of last season. Furthermore, Danny Searle still has a little bit to prove as a manager at this level. His previous spell at Aldershot, albeit with much less of a budget to spend, saw supporters frustrated at some of the football played and a lack of progress made. Whilst Searle certainly did well to keep Ebbsfleet up with the situation that he inherited, he will have to prove his flexibility in navigating the challenges that greater expectations will bring up over a 46 game season.
Prediction: Ebbsfleet are very hard to call. There is a part of me that believes their strength and experience could see them gatecrash the top half of the table in an unlikely play off push. But I do hold a question mark over Danny Searle and wonder if their reliance on physicality in certain areas of the pitch may be exposed by teams more fleet of foot. Certainly a better season nonetheless for the Fleet - comfortable mid table.

Squad brief: A much improved second season for Chris Millington in charge of FC Halifax concluded with defeat in the quarter finals of the play offs but 71 points prior to that was a good return for the 2023 FA Trophy winners. The side from West Yorkshire built their success off the back of the third best defensive record in the division although they are once again rebuilding that area over the summer following the departures of Tylor Golden and Jamie Stott. In replacing the latter, Halifax have signed Will Smith from Harrogate and the young Adam Alimi-Adetoro from Sheffield Wednesday. Both will likely compete with Jo Cummings and Festus Arthur for a spot in the starting line up alongside Adam Senior. One player who is not going anywhere though is goalkeeper and captain Sam Johnson who has over 300 appearances for the side and is arguably one of the best shot stoppers in the division. Out wide, Ryan Galvin and Jack Evans will continue to battle for the left back spot whereas successful triallist Harvey Sutcliffe looks set to start the season at right back.
Elsewhere, in central midfield the club has sadly waved goodbye to veteran Luke Summerfield and Jack Hunter. Nevertheless, the Shaymen have options here with the impressive Kane Thompson-Sommers coming in off the back of an excellent breakthrough season whilst 22-year-old Jamie Cooke also has plenty of admirers with his tireless running in a more advanced role although he will be hoping to add more goals this season. Also, if fit, the club can call upon the creative Florent Hoti, the steady Jack Jenkins or new signing Tom Pugh from Scunthorpe to challenge for the three available spots in the centre. Out wide, you would imagine that Max Wright and Andrew Oluwabori will continue to be the club's main source of creativity with Angelo Capello as one of the backups. Finally, last season's top goalscorer Rob Harker was surprisingly released in the summer by Millington yet he has signed 19-year-old prospect Zac Emmerson as his replacement. The former Blackpool forward looks a real talent with stronger mobility than Harker and a promising short spell at Eastbourne last season where he scored five goals in eleven games.
Manager: Following Pete Wild's excellent performance in charge of FC Halifax was always going to be difficult, yet Chris Millington's two seasons in charge have brought silverware with victory in the FA Trophy final during his first year and a play off position achieved during his second. Like his predecessor, the Town boss does not have a senior playing career to speak of and has instead worked his way up the coaching chain. Millington started out at Altrincham U18s before a short spell abroad in Croatia. Upon returning, he then formed his partnership with Wild for the first time at Oldham Athletic's academy. After a short spell as Oldham Assistant Manager in 2019, he followed the now Barrow manager to Halifax where he has been ever since.
Unheralded Gem: Kane Thompson-Sommers - Another player plucked out of step 2 from Halifax who is slowly transforming into a star. Thompson Sommers added guile and energy to the Shaymen's midfield last season and was rumoured to be of interest to EFL sides this summer. His pace and physicality is crucial in linking with Jamie Cooke, who normally operates just in front of him.
Top Goal-Scorer Prediction: Zac Emmerson
Overall Thoughts: Chris Millington rarely wins any plaudits for the style of football that his side plays but it is hard to argue with the results he has produced across the last eighteen months in charge of FC Halifax. Supporters won't be surprised with another summer of having to rebuild a side that has seen its better players snapped up by larger clubs. Despite the defence normally being a casualty of this, the side are regularly making a habit of having one of the best defensive records in the division with no more than 50 goals conceded in each of the last three seasons. Once again, you would expect defenders Jamie Stott and Tylor Golden to be well replaced over the summer but the side's real struggles have come in front of goal. Although Zac Emmerson looks like a good prospect, no incomings with the side's creative department have been made thus indicating that the Shaymen are likely on for another low scoring season again. Combined with many sides around them vastly strengthening and the loss of experience and effectiveness in Luke Summerfield and Jack Hunter, you have to wonder if FC Halifax will have the tools to rack up a 70+ points total again.
Prediction: Halifax are the one side who I routinely get wrong every season and I think this is because they tend to operate left field with their transfer dealings in a quiet understated fashion. At the risk of being way off again, I think they will struggle to match last season's 7th place finish after some key departures and no real evidence that there are any more goals in this team than there were last season. As Yeovil and Boreham Wood found out in recent campaigns, it is not sustainable to continuously rely on a steadfast defence when the attack is below par season after season. At some point, you will get caught out.

Squad brief: As they always do, Maidenhead endured a streaky 2023/24 lurching from not being able to buy a win to rolling off several positive results in a row. It is almost near expectation now that manager Alan Devonshire will find a way of keeping the Magpies up each season and last season must go down as one of his better achievements such was the squad he started the season with. The club had only scored 35 goals in 35 games but the effective recruitment of Tristan Abrahams and Sam Barratt saw the team hit form with 25 goals scored in the final 11 matches. This also coincided with a tactical shift that saw the talented Reece Smith and the aforementioned Barratt play centrally in front of Casey Pettit with the pace of Ashley Nathaniel-George and Jayden Mitchell-Lawson on the wings. The 4-1-4-1 formation looks set to stay this season with the spine of Craig Ross in goal protected by the large figures of Kevin Lokko and Will de Havilland at centre back.
Nevertheless, the Magpies have had to source new full backs this summer following the loss of Sam Beckwith and Zico Asare to larger clubs. As a result, Tyrese Dice and Zac Bell have been signed from Slough Town and Bristol City respectively to good reviews. Furthermore, Charlee Adams' release has seen former Wealdstone midfielder Nathan Ferguson signed to provide competition and cover for Casey Pettit at the heart of the midfield. The club have managed to resign the majority of their attacking talent but have lost Ashley Nathaniel-George to York City. As he tends to, Devonshire has plucked a couple of young talents to fill the void with Ruben Carvalho and Joseph Ajose signing. Up front, it would be surprising if anybody but Tristan Abrahams started the season with the 25-year-old making a big impact after signing in February. Shawn McCoulsky and Tobi Sho-Silva will provide the alternative options from the bench
Manager: Since finishing an impressive playing career, Alan Devonshire has carved out an almost equally as impressive managerial career at non-league level. The former West Ham and England midfielder has only managed three clubs over a 25 year managerial career highlighting his nous and longevity. Multiple promotions with Hampton and Richmond in the early noughties saw Devonshire move to manage Braintree where he achieved three top half finishes across four seasons in the National League. Upon moving to Maidenhead to become manager there for the second time in his career, Devonshire won instant promotion to the National League where he has maintained Maidenhead's status in the top tier of non-league ever since.
Unheralded Gem: Casey Pettit - The 21-year-old played almost every game for the Magpies last season, dislodging Kane Ferdinand and Charlee Adams in the process. Sitting at the base of the midfield, Pettit has proved one of the best in the division at winning his duels in the middle of the park and it will be no surprise when he eventually moves up the footballing pyramid.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Tristan Abrahams
Overall Thoughts: Anybody who writes a season preview will know the struggle of trying to pinpoint a bottom four with the feeling that Maidenhead should be amongst it but most likely won't finish in it. This is the first season in a while though where I have been very optimistic about the club's prospects and not just because they have received several million pounds for their sell-on clause due to Max Kilman's £40 million transfer from Wolves to West Ham. Nevertheless, it does not surprise me that Maidenhead have not splashed out on bigger names as it would simply not fit their philosophy or be sustainable. The Magpies are an incredibly well-run club and to deviate from a model that works would, in my opinion, put them at more risk of relegation than trusting Alan Devonshire to compose a squad of resolute characters and raw talents that have what it takes to, not just survive, but flourish. The 68-year-old's better teams have always consisted of physicality and individual brilliance; this season both boxes can firmly be ticked. A spine consisting of Ross, Lokko, De Havilland and Abrahams will physically match any side in the division whilst a midfield trio of Pettit, Smith and Barratt is fleet of foot across the ground and will undoubtedly supply goals and assists throughout the season. With Devonshire's replacements for his outgoing stars in the wide areas appearing to be of a similar profile, Maidenhead begin this season with one of their strongest looking squads for a number of years.
Prediction: Inevitably, Maidenhead will encounter difficult spells during the season as they always do, but they look well equipped for the battle ahead with a core group of proven performers and I wouldn't be surprised to see them break 60 points this season for only the second time under Alan Devonshire in this division. Comfortable lower-mid table for the Magpies.

Squad brief: Fresh from a £2 million takeover from the Ogden family in May, Rochdale head into the new season with quiet optimism. Manager Jim McNulty has been handed a new three year contract and a lot of off-season work has taken place to shape the squad to his liking. Tyrese Sinclair was a surprising name on the released list whereas terms were unable to be agreed with Jimmy Keohane and Cameron John. First priority for McNulty was to secure a new goalkeeper following impressive loan spells by Louie Moulden and Tiernan Brooks last season. Another loan signing has been acquired in this position with 24-year-old Luke McNicholas joining from Wrexham for the season. Last season's back four saw a mixture of players used in the full back positions but this time the club has acquired specialists for this area with Tobi Adebayo-Rowling likely to be the number one right back and either Sam Beckwith or the returning Finlay Armstrong at left back. Further changes have also been made in the wider attacking areas with the departures of loan star Cian Hayes, Jeserun Uchegbulam and the previously mentioned Tyrese Sinclair. Instead, Ody Alfa, Aidan Barlow, Tarryn Allarakhia and Connor McBride are the replacements and are all able to play left or right midfield in a 4-4-2.
The spine of the team has been kept largely the same with Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Kyle Ferguson likely to begin the season together at centre back. Meanwhile, Ryan East and Harvey Gilmour will be challenged in midfield by new arrivals Jake Burger and Aaron Henry, who impressed whilst on loan at Wealdstone last season. Up front, it is more of the same for The Dale as last season's top goalscorer Kairo Mitchell will be hoping to beat his 14 goals from last season. Wily veteran Ian Henderson, who turns 40 midway through the coming campaign, will be aiming for another double digit season albeit mostly from the substitute bench. Manager McNulty will hope his trump card this season however is Devante Rodney. The forward was restricted to just 20 appearances due to injury but still managed seven goals - six of which came in the final nine matches of the season.
Manager: Jim McNulty is well known in lower-league circles for his playing career that largely saw him represent clubs in the North West of England. In particular, McNulty's eight year spell at centre back for Rochdale saw him represent the club during some of their best seasons in League One but also during their lowest of lows through two relegations. In 2022, aged 37 with his playing days beginning to wind down, McNulty stepped up as caretaker manager after the sacking of Robbie Stockdale and then later on doing the same after the club relieved Jim Bentley of his services. Despite the club's relegation, McNulty only lost two of his eight games in charge at the end of the League Two season thus persuading the Rochdale board to offer him the position of First Team manager for the club's first non-league season in 102 years. In his first full season in charge, McNulty led the Dale to 11th place with 62 points.
Unheralded Gem: Harvey Gilmour - Perhaps not always fully lauded at Halifax, Gilmour had a superb season just gone for Rochdale where he comprehensively swept up the end of season awards. As one of two central midfielders in a 4-4-2, the 25-year-old is relentless in his closing down and frequently put his body on the line for the Rochdale cause last season.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Devante Rodney
Overall Thoughts: With the difficult first season in the National League navigated, hopes are that Rochdale will be able to kick on this season and compete for a spot in the play off positions. Despite his highly acclaimed status at the club, supporters were mixed on the job that Jim McNulty did last season with his patient possession approach receiving a range of reviews. With a talented group, including the likes of Cian Hayes, Jimmy Keohane and George Nevett, there is a feeling that Rochdale possibly squandered their most recent opportunity to push for the play offs. The club's summer signings have seen a range of young players added to the group with the likes of left back Sam Beckwith and Connor McBride as standouts. Nevertheless, such signings also contain a number of previously inconsistent performers with Aidan Barlow, Tarryn Allarakhia and Ody Alfa hoping to bring their top form to the pitch more frequently. Generally, I worry a little for Rochdale this season. McNulty does not possess much in the way of a plan B if teams become wise to his side's build up play. Whilst a fully fit Devante Rodney will add to the side's firepower, there is also a large quantity of goals that were scored by Hayes, Sinclair and Keohane that need to be replaced and I am not convinced that replacements in these areas will provide the same numbers.
Prediction: Takeovers can be dangerous business as a manager, even when a new bumper contract has just been handed out. Jim McNulty needs to prove this season that he can launch a sustained play off push after building a squad in his mould. Unfortunately, my feeling is that Rochdale may struggle for consistency and as a result, the manager may pay the price with his job. Lower mid table.

Squad brief: After a terrible start of nine points in fifteen games which cost Adam Murray his job, Chris Beech did terrific to acquire 46 points from the remaining 31 matches to secure survival in the division. Such form would have had the Coasters an outside bet for the play off positions if maintained over a whole season. Nevertheless, Beech has rung the changes this season with multiple releases including the experienced Luke Conlan, Danny Whitehead and Danny Philliskirk in a bid to trim the average age of the squad. First, 23-year-old Ben Winterbottom has arrived on loan from Brentford to provide some much needed competition in goal to Theo Richardson, who sometimes found himself under fire last season. With Conlon's departure, the signing of the Lincoln McFayden should excite fans with the left back very able to get up the pitch in support of the attack whilst at centre back, captain Harry Davis will look to partner either Emeka Obi or another mid-season signing in Adam Long. On the right side, the Coasters were sad to see the departure of Connor Barrett to Walsall although mid-season signing Bryce Hosannah or new signing Joe Riley should possess the perfect profile to replace him.
In midfield, the releases of Philliskirk and Whitehead along with the loan departure of Dan Adshead left a sizeable hole but Beech has filled it tremendously with the reacquisition of last season's loan star Ethan Mitchell and 26-year-old Corey Whelan from Carlisle. Also, young 18-year-old starlet Taelor O'Kane, fresh from signing a new contract, will be looking to force his way into Beech's plans. In the wide areas, the departures of Josh Kay and Luke Charman are disappointing but Luke Brennan has joined after a successful trial period and Jon Ustabasi remains following an excellent season with 13 goals and a mountain of assists. In attack, the club have another 18-year-old star in Danny Ormerod, who forced his way into the first team and managed an impressive 7 goals in the second half of last season. The Coasters have looked to add some depth in their forward options with the tireless Charlie Jolley joining from Tranmere and Offrande Zanzala, a player Beech has previously managed at Carlisle, arriving from Newport County. Regardless, the crown jewel in Fylde's armoury is Nick Haughton who operates just behind the striker. Blessed with excellent technique, Haughton shone under Beech's management and scored 15 times in just 29 matches under him.
Manager: After the conclusion of his playing career, Chris Beech secured his UEFA Pro License and spent several years working in the Bury Centre of Excellence and holding responsibility over the club's youth and reserve sides. Eventually, Beech took the same role at local rivals Rochdale until he became Keith Hill's assistant manager in 2013 where the club embarked on one of the greatest periods in their history with promotion to League One and numerous FA Cup runs. In 2019, Beech took the Carlisle job with the side struggling in League Two yet he managed to keep them up with a ratio of 1.6 points per game. Over the next few seasons, Beech's Carlisle side showed great promise but never quite achieved their maximum with COVID the great disrupter. After losing his job in 2021, Beech became AFC Fylde Director of Football in 2022 and took over from Adam Murray in October 2023 to lead the club to safety after their return to the National League.
Unheralded Gem: Danny Ormerod - AFC Fylde's biggest challenge this season might be holding on to their 18-year-old prized asset. The young striker is a slender yet intelligent player who has shown an adaptability by being played out wide on occasions. Moreover, Ormerod has shown a ruthlessness in front of goal and has superb, quick feet in tight situations. A big move beckons.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Nick Haughton
Overall Thoughts: Even when they were rock bottom last season, AFC Fylde had played some good football under Adam Murray but had been far too loose in both boxes. Chris Beech's arrival saw the statistics in both areas improve and subsequently results started to follow. The club have lost a few players over the summer but nobody indispensable: Connor Barrett's exit is well covered by Bryce Hosannah and Joe Riley, whilst Josh Kay was not always a guaranteed starter under the new manager. The club certainly didn't lack goals last season with a healthy total of 74 and you would back the side to potentially match or better this with the likes of Haughton, Ustabasi, Ormerod and other new additions in tow. Nevertheless, 82 goals conceded definitely needs work although it is worth mentioning that 35 of these came in the opening 15 matches under Adam Murray. One aspect that could go against a Fylde play off push is their squad depth. At the time of publishing, the club only have seventeen registered players within the first team squad and this may take its toll with the new seven substitutes rule benefitting those who have larger squads. In particular, the central midfield area could probably use one more addition with very few alternatives to Ethan Mitchell, Corey Whelan and Taelor O'Kane. Undoubtedly though, the club will look to use the loan market once again over the course of the season to enhance the aspects of their side that needs strengthening.
Prediction: I think a lot of people are sleeping on AFC Fylde this season. Possibly because of the competitive nature of the division, they are an easy selection to place in lower mid-table. But I really think that this young side, now with added Football League experience, could sparkle under Beech's guidance and finish above numerous more fancied sides. An enjoyable play off push that ends in upper mid table.

Squad brief: The 2023/24 season will be one to remember for Altrincham as they finished in a superb 4th place scoring over 80 goals in the process. Dynamic in attack, Alty scored three times or more on nine separate occasions, including three 6-1 victories! As expected with a side who performed well last season, there have not been wholesale change with manager Phil Parkinson looking to deepen around the foundations that have got Altrincham to where they are. One issue the Robins solved last season was in goal as Ethan Ross proved a more commanding figure between the sticks than Matt Gould or Ollie Byrne had been before him. With 82 goals conceded in the season prior, Parkinson's back four was more resolute last season with 59 in the against column. A big factor in this was the form of Jake Cooper and Lewis Baines in the centre of defence in the absence of former captain James Jones, who will return this season after making a recovery from a long-term shoulder injury. The reliable Eddy Jones will likely continue at left back whilst Lewis Banks will compete with new signing Tylor Golden for the right back spot.
Blessed with one of the best midfield duos in the division, captain Isaac Marriott will pair up once again with Elliot Osborne. With few options in reserve, Parkinson has signed former Hartlepool midfielder Tom Crawford and will hope to extract full potential from a promising looking career that has stalled in recent years. Undoubtedly the big news for Altrincham this summer however is the loss of National League Player of the Year Chris Conn Clarke to Peterborough. Realistically, the 22-year-old is irreplaceable within the transfer market so Parkinson will hope the duo of Alex Newby and Justin Amaluzor can continue their output alongside Ollie Crankshaw, who was an exciting looking signing last summer but was ruled out for the season with a cruciate ligament injury after only a game and a half. The club have also signed Lucas Weaver, Max Haygarth and Kahrel Reddin to add pace and variety to the attacking options. Up front, Regan Linney will continue to lead the line after 14 goals last season although the arrival of Joe Nuttall should give Altrincham an alternative should they need it.
Manager: Phil Parkinson's stock has risen enormously over the past few seasons following numerous impressive campaigns with the Robins. The former PE teacher and Nantwich Town manager oversaw two promotions in three seasons from between 2017 - 2020, which saw the club promoted to the National League. With the team's dynamic playing style becoming more publicised year-on-year, Parkinson has started to become regularly linked with moves higher up the footballing pyramid. Yet, the manager remains committed to his project at Altrincham where he is the club's first ever full time manager. With Altrincham reaching an outstanding 4th place last season, it remains to be seen just how far Parkinson can take them before serious offers from Football League clubs start coming in.
Unheralded Gem: Alex Newby - Often in the shadow of the now departed Conn-Clarke, Newby's contribution to the team's attacking statistics last season cannot be underestimated. With thirteen goals, a string of assists and a mean free kick to boot, the attacking midfielder is an excellent technician on either wing or in the number ten role behind the striker.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Regan Linney
Overall Thoughts: In a season where numerous team have made big amendments to their sides, Altrincham have quietly put their faith in the bulk of the squad that got them to 4th last season. Standing still can be dangerous in the world of football but Phil Parkinson has made subtle additions to his squad, in particular taking on a few rough diamonds that he will hope can excel for the Robins. Tom Crawford and Joe Nuttall would not have been near the top of most people's shopping lists but Parkinson will hope that he can create an atmosphere in which both can flourish in. The loss of Conn-Clarke is an obvious blow for Altrincham and the odds would suggest that the side's creative output will dip as a result of his departure. Nevertheless, there is still a range of talent in the forward areas and a clear structure under Parkinson for the likes of Newby, Amaluzor and Crankshaw to thrive in collectively. Aside from one five game losing run, Parkinson's men did an excellent job last season against the sides outside of the top seven and they will need to continue dominating against the weaker sides in the division to maintain their own place in the play off positions this coming season.

Squad brief: Back to back relegations for Forest Green Rovers crowned a miserable two years since the departure of former manager Rob Edwards in 2022. Steve Cotterill became the club's fifth manager since the historic promotion to League One two years ago but was unable to halt the irreversible slide back to the National League. The 60-year-old has remained in charge for this coming season as he embarked upon the sizeable challenge of reducing a very mix and match squad and preparing it for the rigours of the National League. Big names such as striker Mathew Stevens, full back Fankaty Dabo and winger Jordan Garrick have departed with Cotterill choosing to recruit quality over quantity this summer. Last season, the Green Devils went through numerous goalkeepers with James Belshaw, Luke Daniels and Vicente Reyes all between the sticks at various points. The arrival of the talented Jed Ward on loan for the year from Bristol Rovers signals the intent of the type of stability that Cotterill wants from the coming season. In defence, left back Jamie Robson remains after featuring in every match last season whilst first choice centre back Ryan Inniss looks set to either partner club captain Jordan Moore-Taylor or new signing Ben Tozer. 34-year-old Tozer is best known for his long throw but has also been a crucial part of the Wrexham team that has just achieved back to back promotions to League One. At right back, the club moved quickly to sign Sean Long from rivals Cheltenham Town with the former Robins captain fresh from just playing 45 times in League One last season.
With Cotterill seeming to favour a 4-3-3 system, it looks like either Charlie McCann or Harvey Bunker will perform the holding role with new signings Alfie May, from League One Cambridge, and Liam Sercombe, off the back of eleven goals in League One, stationed more advanced in the centre. Providing the width, Kyle McAllister will be expected to drive at defenders before cutting in off the right whilst Tom Knowles will play from the left after an inconsistent season last year at Walsall. Up front, it does feel as if the club has gone full circle with the striker who helped them gain promotion from the National League in 2018 rejoining midway through last season. Christian Doidge was a consistent 20-goal-a-season man for Forest Green between 2016-18 but was not able to hit the same levels for Hibernian in the Scottish Premier League. Elsewhere, Cotterill's other option up front is Tyrese Omotoye, who currently only has one senior league goal to his name.
Manager: Steve Cotterill's return to the National League brings his career full circle somewhat having made his name initially with Cheltenham Town in the late 1990s where he earnt promotion from the Southern League and the then named Football Conference. A third promotion followed with the Robins in the early 2000s before leaving to become manager of Stoke City. However, he only stayed in the role for three months before resigning to become Assistant Manager to Howard Wilkinson at Sunderland. A long and varied career has seen the 60-year-old also manage Burnley, Notts County, Portsmouth, Nottingham Forest, Bristol City, Birmingham City and Shrewsbury Town. Further promotions followed at Notts County in a short spell where he led the midlands club to the League Two title in 2009 and at Bristol City in 2015 where he secured the League One title and won the Football League Trophy in the same season. However, Cotterill's biggest battle was in 2021 when he fell seriously ill with COVID and spent a significant period of time in intensive care. Following his recovery, he continued as Shrewsbury manager before resigning from the post in June 2023. Midway through last season, he was appointed Forest Green manager with the side bottom of the entire Football League. Despite an upturn in form, Cotterill could not prevent relegation and he now prepares for his first season in the fifth tier of English football since 1999.
Unheralded Gem: Kyle McAllister - As a rare shining light in a poor side last season, Forest Green Rovers will be delighted to keep the 25-year-old winger amidst interest from Football League sides. One of League Two's most successful dribblers last season, McAllister's main aim will be to increase his output from the right wing where he regularly cuts back onto his left foot. Six goals and seven assists is a target he really should be exceeding at National League level.
Top Goalscorer Prediction: Christian Doidge
Overall Thoughts: After signing several players from League One sides, Forest Green Rovers have immediately jumped into most people's thoughts as one of the pre-season favourites for the title. It is undeniable that some of their signings should be too good for this division on paper but the question has to be asked if the squad still contains too many members of the sides that have failed over the past two years. Hartlepool, Scunthorpe, Oldham and Southend can all attest now to the importance of offloading the negative mentality from within and rebuilding a new positive culture with personnel used to success. Has Steve Cotterill done enough in that sense? I am not sure he has. Whilst the club look strong through the centre of the pitch, there are a sizeable lack of attacking options. Tom Knowles and Kyle McAllister historically both show flashes of brilliance but often lack end product whilst Christian Doidge is an excellent presser and can be a very good finisher if he gets going. I do worry beyond Doidge though if the club have a viable option to stretch teams. Tyrese Omotoye has had a difficult time with only short cameos to showcase what he is about but his lack of prowess in the penalty area should be a concern if Doidge was to pick up an injury. At present, I think Forest Green's squad looks very much in transition. Some effective work has been done which should allow them to compete in the right half of the table this season but a title is won with a squad and not just a starting eleven. Therefore, I do not see them as title challengers in this current guise.
Prediction: Forest Green Rovers have lost 57 league matches over the past two seasons. To suddenly turn that mentality around without a sizeable reset is going to very difficult. With shortcomings in the attacking areas and some aging legs in places, it would not surprise me if Forest Green were overran at times such is the relentless nature of this division. Whilst they may possess some big individual names, I think there will be better teams over the course of the season who will show more consistency to take a top seven spot.

Squad brief: Often dubbed the 'best footballing side in the National League', Gateshead went one further last season and backed up this trait with consistent results. A 6th place finish was a marked improvement on previous campaigns as Gateshead were often feared amongst opposition sides such was their capacity to score at will. Not just that, but the side also managed to avenge their FA Trophy final defeat from last season with a penalty shoot out victory at Wembley against Solihull Moors. Nevertheless, the season still ended in disappointing fashion for the Heed as they were barred from competing in the play offs due to issues surrounding their stadium. This cloud still remains hanging over Gateshead although hopes inside the club are positive that such problems will be rectified over the course of the coming season. Manager Rob Elliot took over in October last season once Mike Williamson had landed a job in the Football League with MK Dons and provided a continuation of the swashbuckling football that the side have become known for. With James Montgomery ending his fourth spell in goal for Gateshead and thus retiring (for now...), Elliot has moved quickly to secure Tiernan Brooks who impressed at Rochdale last season. A pre-requisite for playing in a Gateshead back three has to be showing comfort on the ball under pressure and the Heed have numerous options with Robbie Tinkler, Louis Storey, Kenton Richardson and Joe Grayson all at ease in this scenario. Additionally, Luke Hannant and Kain Adom provide a relentlessness in the role of wing back with Hannant in particular impressing with a career best return of nine goals last season.
The team usually overload the central areas with four midfielders - two who operate deeper and two more advanced. Regan Booty and Callum Whelan were accomplished in front of the back four last season although the club will be disappointed to have lost the ever present Ed Francis to League One side Exeter City. The club have wisely recruited 34-year-old Jacob Butterfield, who despite his age, possesses the technicality to thrive deeper in this Gateshead system. Despite an injury for three months of last season, Greg Olley is a proven source of goals and assists behind the striker and will likely be joined by new signing Will McGowan who was a shining light in a tough season for relegated Blyth Spartans. Up front has been where Rob Elliot has had to carefully consider his options with the departure of 21 goal Marcus Dinanga and Derby County loan star Dajuane Brown. The manager has since returned to the Rams and brought in striker Owen Oseni on a permanent deal following the striker's impressive return of a goal every two games whilst on loan at Rushall Olympic last season. Target man Mark Beck has also joined which will give Gateshead an alternative option up front for likely the latter stages in matches.
Manager: Despite playing the bulk of his career in the Premier League and Championship, Rob Elliot spent a large proportion as an understudy at Charlton and Newcastle United. With his career winding down, his first involvement at Gateshead was in 2021 where he assisted Mike Williamson's coaching staff whilst on the books of Watford. In August 2022, Elliot joined permanently as the club's First Team Technical Director and he held this position until he was named as Interim Manager following Williamson's departure in October 2023. He was given the permanent job this summer after an impressive tenure which saw him gain 50 points in 31 matches and also win the FA Trophy for the first time in the club's history.
Unheralded Gem: Luke Hannant - Five years after departing in 2018, Luke Hannant returned to Gateshead last summer and immediately established himself as a fan favourite with his high work rate and ability to travel quickly with the ball. Possessing an excellent right foot, the 30-year-old is tough to stop when he cuts in from the left and will be hoping to deliver double figures from the left side this season.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Owen Oseni
Overall Thoughts: There are many who tipped Gateshead to succeed in the play offs last season yet we will never know quite how close they would have come to promotion. Such a disappointment must have hit hard to the point where some are questioning the team's motivation this season with future promotion prospects uncertain. Nevertheless, one thing for certain is that Gateshead are one of, if not, the best places in the National League for young prospects from teams in higher divisions to come and ply their trade in senior football. Add these exciting, young stars to a core of long-serving dedicated players who are completely in tune with the way Rob Elliot wishes to play and you have a continuous recipe for success. The side's philosophy does contain chinks in the armour like any though. If a side can beat the heavy Heed press once possession has been regained, there is joy to be had as signalled by the 64 goals conceded last season. Nevertheless, this is no easy feat considering the amount that Gateshead will look to dominate the ball. As to how well they can do this season, it is some job to replace not just Marcus Dinanga, Dajuane Brown and Ed Francis but also the likes of Stephen Wearne who shone during the first half of last season. However, such is the Gateshead way that they will almost certainly continue to find young talent who can slot straight into the side's aggressive possession based approach. Owen Oseni and Will McGowan look to be the latest additions who will set the division alight this season as Rob Elliot seeks a second consecutive season in the play offs.
Prediction: With the first game fast approaching, Gateshead are well primed to repeat last season's league success. The club's summer business has been smart where required: a new goalkeeper adept with his feet; an experienced central midfielder who is superb on the ball; and a dynamic, all-round striker with the tools to score a lot at this level. I expect the loan market to be used expertly again with a repeat of last season where Gateshead comfortably finish in a play off spot.

Squad brief: As predicted in the previous blog, Hartlepool just had too many players in their squad who needed moving on which resulted in a transitional season. This summer, the remnants from the club's relegation a season ago have been moved on with the likes of Brody Paterson, Callum Cooke, Josh Umerah, Jake Hastie and Tom Crawford released. With instability still hovering around owner Raj Singh, it has hardly been a full scale rebuild and more of manager Darren Sarll strengthening the squad where he can. New goalkeeper Adam Smith looks set to replace Joel Dixon as the club's first choice following the 30-year-old's addition to the transfer list after mixed performances last season. In defence, the return of Daniel Dodds, after an ACL ruled him out for the majority of last season, is a huge boost for Pools whilst captain David Ferguson will hope for a better season after again receiving mixed reviews on his own performances last season. At centre back, Hartlepool look imposing with serial promotion winner Luke Waterfall and 32-year-old Tom Parkes a pair of excellent mid season signings. As backup, former Boreham Wood loanee Billy Sass-Davies will offer a younger pair of legs when called upon.
In midfield, Sarll has looked to address the powderpuff nature of the side's midfield from last season that often saw them overrun. Nathan Sheron and Jack Hunter have been signed from Oldham and Halifax respectively and will be tasked with ball retention and getting the side on the attack. Greg Sloggett is an interesting acquisition after joining Cheltenham mid-season and not overly impressing but he undoubtedly has talent and can play multiple positions across the midfield. Across the front line, Sarll will hope Mani Dieseruvwe will replicate a superb first season at the club where he scored 23 goals. Joe Grey, who largely played to the side of the 6 foot 4 striker also showed promise with a 13 goal return. In further strengthening this area, Fylde's Luke Charman, who played his best football down the left for the Coasters, has joined alongside former Gateshead forward Adam Campbell who has signed from League Two Play Off winners Crawley Town. All being said, the jewel in Hartlepool's crown is Anthony Mancini with Sarll praying he can keep the 23-year-old number ten fit after he only managed 14 appearances last season.
Manager: At only 23-years-old, Darren Sarll's short non-league playing career was cut short in 2006 when the route into youth coaching presented itself. With many years of experience gained, Sarll stepped up to manage Stevenage after they disposed of Teddy Sheringham. An inconsistent spell saw the club lurch in and out of form during his two years in charge. Nevertheless, this was enough to see Yeovil Town appoint him as manager in 2019 following their relegation to the National League. Sarll impressed during his time at the Glovers and managed to take them into the play offs during his first season despite difficulties with the club's ownership behind the scenes. With key assets sold, Sarll was able to stabilise the following seasons until moving to Woking in March 2022. His first campaign at the Cards was a resounding success with a 4th place finish, yet the 41-year-old found himself out of work only a few months later following the side's disastrous start to last season. Yet, in April of this year, Hartlepool decided to dispose with Kevin Phillips and hired Sarll in the hope that he can be the man to lead the Monkey Hangers back to the Football League.
Unheralded Gem: Anthony Mancini - There may not be another player in the division who is as important to a side as Anthony Mancini is to Hartlepool. From the eleven starts the midfielder made last season, Pools won seven with the 23-year-old often the star with three goals and numerous assists. Able to carry the ball forward effortlessly at times, Mancini is a quality operator with an excellent left foot. If he stays fit for the majority of the season, expect him not to be short of offers from Football League clubs.

Overall Thoughts: Last season proved to be a chastening return to the National League for Hartlepool. 82 goals conceded highlighted the lack of authority stamped on matches and also the ease at which teams split their soft centre apart. With the majority of culprits discarded over the summer, Pools now look much tougher and Darren Sarll will simply expect nothing less. The signings of Jack Hunter and Nathan Sheron may not be particularly glamorous on paper but could well be two of the most important acquisitions of the window just for the level of control it will give back to the side. Nevertheless, there are still some frailties remaining with a lack of pace within the defence and injuries that seem to plague Pools' big players too frequently. A big positive however is the retention of Mani Dieseruvwe who is perhaps typecast due to his size and therefore underrated in the division for his penalty box prowess. In addition, Sarll's success at Woking often saw the collective relentless of Browne and Korboa from wide areas and he may be able to replicate this with Luke Charman, Joe Grey and Adam Campbell possessing a similar skillset - the latter especially. Sarll himself has previously achieved a play off position with Yeovil and Woking in his opening season with both clubs. With clear clarification over the roles players have within his sides, I foresee Hartlepool's tight-knit squad excelling under him.
Prediction: This Hartlepool squad looks much more compact and built in the manager's image than last season. Tough no nonsense defenders, hard workers in midfield and goals across the front line: a set up perfect for Darren Sarll. They are probably more unfancied, yet more likely to achieve a play off push than last season. What may stop them is their lack of depth. Sensible recruitment across the season and a bit of luck on the injury front will be vital. If they can do both of these occur, I think this may be the season where Hartlepool get back amongst the promotion contenders.

Squad brief: Last season was a major disappointment for Oldham Athletic. David Unsworth was sacked just nine games into the season with the club lying in 22nd position and although Micky Mellon managed to guide the club up to 5th at one point, a terrible run of no wins from their final ten matches saw the play offs end up as a distant dream. A break during the summer has allowed Mellon to significantly trim the squad with the likes of Devarn Green, Kurt Willoughby and Dan Ward departing whilst incomings have been few and far between. Pre-season has also allowed Mellon to experiment in places with the side looking likely to field a 3-4-2-1 formation at the beginning of the season. The back three in front of goalkeeper Mark Hudson looks like to be comprised of Shaun Hobson, Charlie Raglan and new signing Manny Monthe from Northampton. 21-year-old Will Sutton and aging former captain Liam Hogan look set to be backup at this stage.
With a change to a wing back system, Mellon has a couple of options for either side. On the right, it looks to be a battle between new signings with the energy of Reagan Ogle, experience of Jake Caprice or the guile of Josh Kay whereas the left seems to be a choice between the more defensive Mark Kitching or former Rochdale winger Jeserun Uchegbulam. It does appear that the Latics will be playing a box midfield with two central midfielders slightly deeper and two more advanced. Expect Tom Conlan and Josh Lundstrum to be tasked with retaining possession and transitioning the team onto the offensive whilst Oliver Hammond and new signing Harry Charslay are given the responsibility of linking with the striker and wide men higher up the pitch. Up front, Oldham possess the same options as they did last season with giant Mike Fondop seemingly set to start the season following injuries to James Norwood and 36-year-old Joe Garner whilst Alex Reid appears largely out of favour. Last season, Norwood notched 17 goals but his form largely tailed off in the new year with only three goals in 2024. Overall, do not be surprised to see Mellon switch to a formation involving a front two, wide midfielders and full backs once he has his full contingent of strikers available again.
Manager: Few managers have a better record in the lower leagues than Mickey Mellon. Landing his first managerial post at Fleetwood in 2008, he soon secured promotion to the National League before securing a play off finish immediately the season after. Although they did not gain promotion, Mellon led Fleetwood to the National League title a season later with 103 points. Despite sitting in 4th place in League Two, Mellon was sacked in December 2012. A few years as Barnsley Assistant Manager followed before becoming Shrewsbury manager in 2014. Several memorable cup runs were embarked on as Shrewsbury were promoted to League One. Nevertheless, he once again departed a club soon into a new season following a poor start where the Shrews were in the relegation zone. Tranmere was to prove Mellon's next destination where he won the National League for the 2nd time in 2018 and followed this up the season after with promotion to League One via the play offs. A COVID disrupted season saw Tranmere subsequently relegated on a points per game basis. Following a short spell at Dundee United, Mellon was rehired by Tranmere ahead of the 22/23 season but was sacked with the club 14th in League Two. The experienced Scot made Oldham his 5th club as a manager in October 2023 but was unable to steer them into the play offs by the end of the season.
Unheralded Gem: Reagan Ogle - A major deficiency for Oldham last season was their lack of a natural right back and Ogle's arrival should fix this immediately. Impressive last season for Scunthorpe, Ogle is a typical all action full back with a tendency to get forward yet does not forgo his defensive duties in the process.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: James Norwood
Overall Thoughts: With last season tailing off so badly, Oldham Athletic were in desperate need of major surgery to rid them of some of the aging, overpaid flops from the David Unsworth era. Micky Mellon has managed to move on a lot of the fringe players but many of those who featured heavily last season still remain. One of the club's major issues of recent times has been the lack of dynamism within the lineup. With very few willing to run at and commit defenders, opponents have been able to screen and stifle Oldham's attacking efforts quite comfortably. The additions of Jeserun Uchegbulam and Josh Kay are a start but perhaps also bring some issues of their own. Uchegbulam is renowned for his electric pace but a real lack of end product whilst Kay is an excellent footballer but perhaps lacks that change of gear to the point where he was no longer first choice at AFC Fylde by the end of last season. Nevertheless, the additions of Reagan Ogle and Jake Caprice will give Oldham a better balance and potentially over the season they could build up fine partnerships with Kay and Uchegbulam down the flanks. I commented in last season's preview on the underwhelming nature of Oldham's strike force and whilst the likes of Willoughby and Hope have been moved on, injuries obtained by Norwood and Garner do leave the club light for the opening weeks of the season. Mike Fondop is an excellent disrupter to bring on late in games but realistically should not be a regular starter for a team seeking promotion. Upon his return, a big burden will be placed on James Norwood for goals but the 33-year-old requires service and I am not convinced Oldham have the creativity within their personnel to get the best from him.
Prediction: There is always a fancied team that underachieve and I am anticipating Oldham to be that side again this season. Although their recruitment looks more cohesive overall, I do not believe their recruitment has ultimately fully solved the creativity issues that the team faced last season and with other sides strengthening, it is hard to make a compelling case for a top seven position. In fact, with Norwood and Garner injured for the start of the season, I will stick my neck out and predict a slow start for Oldham, Mickey Mellon's sacking and and a Latics side similar to last season that narrowly miss out.

Squad brief: An entertaining three years of Sutton in the Football League came to a sudden end last season. Led by Matt Gray, the side reached a peak of 8th in League Two and also made the final of the EFL Trophy in 2022. Nevertheless, Gray was sacked during the previous campaign after a terrible start with Steve Morison appointed with the club only on 18 points with 21 matches remaining. Although the side were much more competitive with many draws and a succession of wins in March, it was not enough as Sutton were relegated with 42 points - three shy of 22nd place. What makes the U's fascinating is the approach they have taken to pre-season with last season's squad ripped apart to the point where you can count those remaining from League Two on one hand. Morison has targeted a particular profile of player this summer with only one signing aged over 25 and the majority having had substantial experience of step one or two football. In goal, the club moved early for highly-rated Braintree goalkeeper Jack Sims although an early injury suggests that veteran Steve Arnold, one of the few remaining from April, may start the season.
Speaking of experience, barring 34-year-old right back Ryan Jackson, the defence has a talented new look to it. The acquisitions of central defenders Harry Ransom and Tyler French have to be seen as impressive captures with both showing themselves as capable of operating at a higher level in previous seasons. Hayden Muller, fresh from eighteen months playing in the League of Ireland, and left footed Charlie Waller, coming off an impressive loan at Banbury United last season, offer accomplished alternatives here. Left back is the source of one of the most exciting arrivals however with Aveley's 20-year-old star Eduino Vaz, hotly tipped for a Football League move in the future, expected to showcase his dynamism this season. Morison's 4-3-3 formation has required the central midfield area to be reinforced with Jayden Harris and Lewis Simper - both with former loan spells at this level - joining alongside young AFC Bournemouth prospect Jack Wadham and another ex Aveley starlet in Siju Odelusi. The wide forward areas have been well-stocked with guile and trickery with pace merchants Jeremy Sivi and Dillion De Silva signing. Keep an eye out for 22-year-old Nana Boateng as well who had promising loan spells at Woking and at Solihull Moors - where he held his nerve to score a penalty in the play off final shootout. Up front, the additions of Matt Rush and Will Davies have potential with both previously shining in the National League South. Ashley Nadesan however provides experience of succeeding in the Football League despite coming off the back of a difficult individual season.
Manager(s): After a playing and managerial career that has seen him play and coach at a variety of levels, Steve Morison returns to the league where he made his name this season with Sutton United. As a prolific National League goalscorer back in the day for Stevenage, Morison mostly played in the Championship for the rest of his career with Leeds and Millwall. However, a nine goal season in the Premier League for Norwich in 2011 would be the crowning moment in an impressive playing career. Following his retirement from playing, Morison initially managed Cardiff City U23s but following Mick McCarthy's sacking, he was made interim manager of the first team. He successfully kept the club in the Championship but was sacked early into the new season after a poor start. In the summer of 2023, Morison surprised many by dropping to the Isthmian Premier League to take over at Hornchurch. The 40-year-old immediately impressed by only losing one of the club's 22 opening fixtures. However, Morison resigned shortly in the new year of 2024 when the opportunity to take charge of Sutton United presented itself. With the team in the League Two relegation zone, Morison saw a small upturn in form but it was not enough to secure survival with the club dropping back to the National League three years after achieving promotion.
Unheralded Gem: Siju Odelusi - Sensationalist headlines will promote Siju Odelusi as a defensive midfielder who scored seventeen goals last season (twelve were penalties). However, the 25-year-old's move to the National League has come through his other attributes consistently shining during Aveley's top seven finish. The well-rounded midfielder is technically excellent, comfortable navigating out of tight situations and has the strength and athleticism to drive into midfield with the ball at his feet. A gem of a player for this young, mobile Sutton side.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Ashley Nadesan
Overall Thoughts: A few clubs have chosen to completely renovate their playing squad this pre-season but none more so than Sutton United. Aiming to avoid the relegation hangover, the U's have discarded the bulk of squad who became used to losing in League Two and replaced them with personnel who are on an upward curve in their career. Whilst a large majority of these players are at the beginning of their career, manager Morison has been smart to make sure that he has recruited those hardened from the experiences gained in men's football - many of whom have been involved in promotion pushes with their previous clubs. Nevertheless, there are still some legitimate concerns more so in the forward areas. Ashley Nadesan is a gamble with the 29-year-old completely seeming to lose his confidence last season with Gillingham. Elsewhere, Matt Rush had an excellent second half of last season with Maidstone in the National League South but had previously been goal shy before that in his career. Will Davies is a striker who may flourish but did undergo difficult spells at York and Bromley last season. Ultimately, Sutton carry the vibe of a side who will need to spread the goals amongst the team with the likes of Josh Coley, Nana Boateng and Jeremy Sivi needing to aspire for as close to ten goals apiece as they can get. Nevertheless, with a manager who has shown a willingness to play on the front foot, it is likely that Sutton will create a lot of opportunities for the players in these areas to fully flourish.
Prediction: Sutton are certainly an exciting collection of talents and I have no doubt that they will be one of the more entertaining attacking sides within the division under Steve Morison. It is very hard to predict how an entirely new squad of players will do but I expect them to be very open, which could well see mixed results achieved. Maybe akin to Aldershot last season, I feel that the U's could well be the Jekyll and Hyde side of the division and may just fall short of a play off spot as a result.

Squad brief: A year on from Matt Uggla's takeover of the club and the new owner will have learnt some chastening lessons during his first season. A bloated squad with too many players not up to the standards of National League football almost saw York relegated before a brave move to hire Adam Hinshelwood as manager paid off with narrow survival. The 40-year-old has set about trimming away at some of last summer's poor purchases with the likes of Quevin Castro, Alex Woodyard and Finlay Barnes departing. Straight away this pre-season, Hinshelwood has looked to recruit a calibre of player comfortable with his aggressive possession based approach. Despite only signing in October, goalkeeper George Sykes-Kenworthy will face a battle to hold on to his number one spot after Harrison Male, known for his excellent distribution, was signed from Dorking. At centre back, Callum Howe will likely continue as the club's first choice centre back alongside either new signing Darragh O'Connor or possibly Ryan Fallowfield who deputised well during the back end of last season. The full back positions will probably be filled by new signings with former Rochdale man Cameron John joining after impressing during a trial period and the dynamic Joe Felix following his old manager from Worthing.
Such is the demands of the style Hinshelwood asks from his players, it is no surprise that he has looked to surround himself with those who have played under him before at Worthing. Central midfielder Ricky Aguiar earnt his move to Swindon off the back of some excellent displays at Worthing and has chosen to reunite with his old manager. He will likely face competition for a starting spot from an impressive selection of midfielders including Daniel Batty, Marvin Armstrong and Alex Hunt - the latter joining also this summer after an impressive loan spell last season. Elsewhere, it came as no surprise to any non-league football fan that Ollie Pearce, fresh from scoring 43 times for Worthing last season, also reunited with his former manager. As a result, 15 goal Dipo Akinyemi may start more from the flanks this coming season although he will face competition from new wide men Ashley Nathaniel-George and Tyrese Sinclair who have both proven to be more than capable operators at this level.
Manager: Following a player career largely spoilt by ACL and knee injuries, Adam Hinshelwood has worked his way up the managerial ladder starting his journey with spells at Hastings United, Selsey and a short first spell at Worthing. In 2015 however, Hinshelwood left to pursue a full time coaching career at Brighton - the club he made his name at as a player. Nevertheless, he returned to Worthing in 2017 during which time he managed to gain promotion from the Isthmian Premier League in 2021/22 after several COVID disrupted seasons. The Rebels have managed to reach the play offs in their first two seasons in the National League South although Hinshelwood chose to leave the club with two months left to take up the York City position. The club were in 20th position when he arrived but 18 points from the eleven remaining games were enough to see the Minstermen narrowly survive.
Unheralded Gem: Marvin Armstrong - With York City staring at a disastrous relegation, the mid-season signing of Marvin Armstrong was a key catalyst in the Minstermen's form turning around. Containing excellent energy off the ball and driving runs on it, the 25-year-old has also previously played under Hinshelwood at Worthing and possesses the passing range and intelligent movement required to play in the manager's interchangeable system.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Ollie Pearce
Overall Thoughts: If last season taught us anything, it is that good recruitment is more important than aimlessly throwing money around. Although it was a big risk at the time, Matt Uggla's last minute twist in hiring Adam Hinshelwood could well pay dividends this season. The 40-year-old has gained a lot of admirers from his last two seasons in the National League South at Worthing in which they scored 92 and 104 goals. Simplified down, the manager's approach often sees full backs, midfielders and strikers interchanging at will in order to exploit space. Being pragmatic, such overloads in key areas are incredibly tough for the opposition to deal with but this also leads to dangerous turnovers which is probably why Worthing have conceded 72 goals exactly in both of their most recent campaigns. It was also clear last season when Hinshelwood first joined that he requires the correct personnel to execute his on field plans as seen by an initial four game winless run. Nevertheless, surrounding himself with several of his former players and purchasing technically sound athletes in a variety of positions looks to be a combination in which York can excel from. On paper, with the chances Hinshelwood's men should create and the depth of goal-scorers that they now own, there is no reason why York should not be challenging at the right end this season.
Prediction: York City's recruitment this summer has been excellent. Lessons seem to have been learnt from the past and the club now possess a deep squad filled with players attuned to the manager's style. Expect there to be some wild fluctuating results at times this season but overall I expect Hinshelwood's side to be one of the highest scorers in the division which should help to propel them towards a play off challenge.

Squad brief: Finishing 2nd, scoring 91 goals and winning more than half of their fixtures transpired into an excellent season for Barnet but it concluded on a sour note with a 4-0 defeat in the play off semi final to Solihull Moors. Such a result had become a bit of an irritating habit for the Bees with sporadic thrashings occurring occasionally throughout what was a fairly unblemished season otherwise. This pre-season, Dean Brennan has decided to go all out with his summer signings quite simply in a bid to win the league. Some of the fat has been trimmed from the squad with Dale Gorman a surprise exit. However, Brennan has rather fascinatingly made twelve signings and deepened his squad to around 25 first team players, which is huge by comparison to most. Firstly, Brennan has swooped for the goalkeeper who kept a clean sheet against them in the play offs last season with former Solihull loanee Nick Hayes joining. In defence, the rumours were that the talented Danny Collinge may have received offers from Football League sides but it appears he will be staying along with fellow centre backs Jerome Okimo and Adebola Oluwo from last season. However, with injuries often ensuring others had to deputise in defence at times, Brennan has signed five new centre backs in the form of Joe Rye, Joe Kizzi, Nikola Tavares, Myles Kenlock and Joe Grimwood. Such depth will likely mean that Barnet set up at times in a back three with ex Ebbsfleet man Kenlock capable of playing left wing back and former Dagenham defender Tavares possibly stepping into midfield if required.
Speaking of midfield, Brennan will have been delighted to have brought the influential Anthony Hartigan back, this time on a permanent deal. He has been joined by another fantastic ball player in Billy Clifford from Ebbsfleet and a midfielder more attuned to the gritty side of the game in Mark Shelton from Oldham. Options within the Barnet front three are also fairly stacked. Nicke Kabamba is probably a shoe in after his 26 goals last season and he will likely be flanked by the ever improving Callum Stead and the dynamic Rhys Browne who has joined from Woking. However, should there be injuries the likes of Harry Pritchard or Jermaine Francis, signed from Chelmsford, could deputise. And all this is under the assumption that Barnet will play a 3-4-3. With Dean Brennan's adaptability, there will be occasions where they play a flat back four this season and the likes of Zac Brunt, Idris Kanu, Luke Freeman or other new signing Finlay Wilkinson may be required in a more attacking midfield role.
Manager(s): After initially managing the club alongside Harry Kewell, Dean Brennan was entrusted as the sole main man after Kewell's sacking in September 2021. The former Wealdstone manager made his name initially as manager of Hemel Hempstead following promotion to the National League South. A short stint in the limelight as Billericay Town manager under controversial chairman Glenn Tamplin followed before another brief experience as manager of Kingstonian left Brennan's career at a crossroads. Nevertheless, it was Wealdstone who gave him an opportunity which he repaid by leading them to promotion to the National League. Brennan eventually resigned as Wealdstone manager following initial rumours that he was about to become the new Barnet manager. Despite failing to land the number one role initially, his spell in charge since has ultimately been a success after making the play offs in both of his seasons in charge.
Unheralded Gem: Callum Stead - Possibly overshadowed by the number of goals that Nicke Kabamba scored last season, Callum Stead had a superb debut campaign in the National League really coming into his own during the closing months. With 15 goals notched largely as a wide forward, Stead's game has developed into more than just about goals however. He is relentless with his work ethic, pulling defenders into uncomfortable positions and providing so much space for others to flourish in.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Nicke Kabamba
Overall Thoughts: There are no two ways about it; Barnet have gone big this season. Admiringly, Dean Brennan has recognised that his side were not quite the finished article and has looked to solve these problems within pre-season. The manager will hope that long gone are the days where the likes of Idris Kanu and Harry Pritchard have to fill in as defensive cover. Such a plethora of defensive options may seem excessive to some but the likelihood is that Brennan, an excellent man manager, will find roles for the vast majority of them. For example, it appears that Nikola Tavares may be used in midfield at times as a way of ensuring the opposition can not nullify Barnet simply by negating the impact of Anthony Hartigan in midfield. The Bees' worst results often arrived last season when Hartigan, who delivered the highest number of passes in the division, was prevented from running the game, hence the importance of Barnet having others within their squad who can set the tempo too. A squad as big as what the Bees have will inevitably contain squad members dissatisfied with their playing time however and it will be up to Brennan to trim the squad accordingly through loan exits and permanent moves for those who end up not in his immediate plans throughout the campaign. Importantly though, it looks like Barnet will have a plan B this season with many variations as to how they can set up. A lack of alternatives to personnel and playing style were the issues on those rare occasions that they were beaten soundly. Certainly Brennan will be aiming for the league title what with the pressure of the play offs seeing his side underperform in them for the past two seasons.
Prediction: With a stacked squad, Barnet have looked to cover any deficiencies that they may have had in defence or midfield from last season. There are goals all the way throughout this Bees' side and provided that Brennan learns his most effective player combinations quickly, it is very hard to look beyond Barnet as the choice for the title this season.

Squad brief: One penalty was the difference between Solihull becoming a Football League side or remaining in the National League last season with Joss Labadie missing the decisive spot kick in the Play Off final. To compound matters, the team then lost the FA Trophy final on penalties a week later to ensure the third time in as many years that the side had lost after extra time at Wembley. Overall though, manager Andy Whing enjoyed a successful first season at the Moors taking the side from lower mid table to a 5th place finish. The 39-year-old has trimmed the squad over the summer whilst expectedly losing two of his better players in Joe Sbarra and Callum Maycock to Football League teams. Nevertheless, the core of the successful Solihull side remains from last season as the club look to embark on another play off push. There has been a change in goal however with last season's loan signing Nick Hayes joining Barnet instead. In a rather poetic twist of fate, Solihull have thus signed former Bees keeper Laurie Walker after the 34-year-old controversially fell out of Dean Brennan's favour during the previous campaign. In defence, with Jay Benn's loan spell not renewed, Moors needed a player to challenge outstanding right/centre back James Clarke. Triallist Jacob Pinnington did enough in pre-season to earn himself a deal and show supporters that he may be an alternative to Irishman Clarke if he does move into a central defence role this season. Clarke deputised brilliantly there for the injured Kyle Morrison at times last season although new signings Ollie Tipton or Jordan Tunnicliffe may well take that spot alongside undisputed first choice Alex Whitmore. The consistent Joe Newton will likely continue at left back although versatile Kade Craig is certainly capable of filling in there if need be.
As stated, Callum Maycock's departure has left a gaping hole in the heart of the Moors midfield although the marquee signing of John Bostock from Notts County has certainly cushioned that blow. The 32-year-old will likely play deepest alongside the experienced Jamey Osbourne or Joss Labadie. Keep an eye out for new signing Sam Bowen though who has also joined following an excellent spell on loan at Wealdstone last season. Whing has also looked to add further firepower with Joe Sbarra and Mark Beck departing and as a result highly rated attacking midfielder Bradley Stevenson has joined. With striker Tahvon Campbell solidifying the striker spot after joining from Rochdale back in February, Whing has also added Mansfield striker James Gale to the group on a year long loan to provide some competition.
Manager: As a solid right back in his day, Andy Whing most notably turned out for Coventry City, Brighton and Oxford United during his playing career. After retirement in 2015, Whing had short spells at Kidderminster and Hereford as U23 and Assistant Manager respectively. It was in 2020 though that Whing took the job that would define his career to date as Banbury United manager. Whing unexpectedly led the club to a resounding promotion to the National League North in 2022 with four matches to spare. Even more impressively, despite having to deal with key players leaving, such as Chris Wreh and Morgan Roberts, Whing ensured Banbury survived relegation with 54 points and a 17th place finish before resigning in May 2023 and being appointed as Solihull Moors manager shortly afterwards. In his first season in charge, Whing led the club to 5th place on 76 points but found himself on the losing side in the Play Off and FA Trophy finals.
Unheralded Gem: Bradley Stevenson - An absolute goal machine at step three level with 47 goals and 37 assists over the last two seasons. Stevenson will often be found driving forward from the tip of the midfield or arriving late into the box to apply the finish. Aged 25, the former Billericay man is an accomplished passer and physically suited to the demands of the National League.
Top goal-scorer prediction: Tahvon Campbell
Overall Thoughts: Last season, Solihull Moors were that consistently solid side who did not drop out of the play offs for the entirety of the season. Gritty and determined, the Moors had the best away record in the division and, despite the odd hammering that impacted their goal difference, mastered the art of winning by the odd goal on the road. Andy Whing's men could certainly play though when they needed to with goals much more of a collective team effort as opposed to having just one or two focal points. Potentially, the Moors could be more productive in attack this season after Joe Sbarra suffered an injury hit final campaign in the National League and Tyrese Shade's loan spell showed promise but ultimately produced a lack of output. Nevertheless, Tahvon Campbell showed his goalscoring potential in the final few months with nine goals from nineteen games whilst the signing of James Gale from Mansfield has slightly gone under the radar but has potential to be incredibly prolific. Historically, the Moors have flattered to deceive the season after a play off finish over the last eight years but I do not foresee any hangover this time. The club are in a secure place behind the scenes with Director of Football Stephen Ward a success and adept at working with Andy Whing to carefully hand pick players - a process which will continue throughout the season as Moors meticulously add to their squad when they are required to.
Prediction: Once again, I see Solihull as being an incredibly disciplined side who quietly set about their business over the course of the season. With a wealth of experience, I expect them to be difficult to break down on the road and resolute enough over 46 games to make the top seven. If they get there, then they are certainly a side that you would not want to draw in the play offs with the experience that they hold.

Squad brief: Faced with the uncertainty of even starting last season, Southend United did tremendously to overcome a ten point deduction to finish in 9th place. Further good news came the Shrimpers' way this summer with Ron Martin finally ousted as club owner with the COSU consortium led by Justin Rees taking over. Aside from the relief that Southend's future has now been secured, the takeover ensures that Kevin Maher can now operate in the transfer market and add to a tight-knit squad. It is testament to the comradery that the management team have built that very few players have departed over the past twelve months despite the financial issues faced. One figure that did depart however was experienced goalkeeper coach David Martin, who also deputised for number one goalkeeper Collin Andeng-Ndi. In front of the Cameroon goalkeeper will likely be the usual back three of Harry Taylor, Ollie Kensdale and captain Nathan Ralph. Nevertheless, Maher has also added Joe Gubbins, who has a short loan spell at the club in 2022, from Accrington Stanley. The 23-year-old will likely compete with Nathan Ralph for the left centre back position whilst Adam Crowther, signed midway through last season, will compete with Kensdale and Taylor for starting spots.
At wing back, the reliable pair of Jack Bridge and Gus Scott-Morriss all almost certain to be first choice. However, the Shrimpers have added exciting Billericay right wing back George Wind to their ranks to provide competition and an alternative to the important Scott-Morriss down the right hand side. In midfield, the indispensible Cav Miley remains an important figure in Maher's midfield. The spot alongside him is available to grab with James Morton stepping up brilliantly during the short time Noor Husin was injured last season. Behind the strikers, the expectation is that Ollie Coker will continue following a fine debut season in the Southend senior side although do not be surprised if the club sign further competition for him what with the departure of Wes Fonguck. Up front, Harry Cardwell ended the season with an excellent 19 goals from 38 league games. Danny Waldron will be hoping to partner him after moving from Rushall Olympic midway through last season when he had 16 goals by mid January for the National League North club. However, Maher's signing of Josh Walker could well see the ex Dagenham and Redbridge man leading the line for Southend instead.
Manager: As a player, Kevin Maher is a name that will be well known to supporters of lower league sides following a ten year playing spell at the club he currently manages. As a manager, Maher's credentials are less documented prior to The Shrimpers although he quietly impressed in coaching roles at several clubs including Bristol Rovers. His appointment as Southend manager in 2021 was unexpected at the time although it has proved to be a good decision with the team impressing on the pitch despite the turmoil off of it. With much uncertainty as to whether Southend would be permitted to compete last season, Maher loyalty fully cemented his reputation as a club legend with him leading the Shrimpers to 9th place despite a ten point deduction.
Unheralded Gem: Ollie Kensdale - Incredibly comfortable on the ball with a great range of passing, Ollie Kensdale's performances over the past few seasons saw him deservedly claim an England C cap in 2024. Not just progressive on the ball, Kensdale is also a superb, and slightly underrated, defender at the heart of Southend's back three who will pivotal to their hopes of promotion this season.
Top Goal-scorer Prediction: Josh Walker
Overall Thoughts: The sense of comradery shown by this Southend squad last season provides supporters with great optimism for the season ahead. Despite a threadbare squad at times, Maher's men coped admiringly well with the frantic schedule of the National League and only rarely saw drops in their performance level. So much so that Southend actually possessed the best defensive record in the division last season with only 45 goals conceded and it is testament to those within the squad that a play off place would also comfortably have been secured without a ten point deduction. It will be interesting to see how Southend perform without the motivation of adversity driving them on; however, this group of players have been in the trenches for a good while now and will have developed a resilience and togetherness that will surely help them out in tight moments this season. Recruitment wise, Southend will want to add to their squad although sensibly they are taking their time over new additions so not to lose the culture that has been built. Nevertheless, although the Shrimpers were not goal shy last season, to compete at the very top they will need to add an extra ten to fifteen goals to their tally of seventy. It may be that this comes in the form of a more prolific attacking midfielder or perhaps Josh Walker will be able to add the goals that were lacking in support of Harry Cardwell last season. With an incredibly solid base to build from though, there is room for Kevin Maher, supported by Darren Currie, Mark Bentley and John Still, to make the necessary tactical and personnel tweaks as the season progresses.
Prediction: Whilst the squad is not yet complete, it is often not how you start but how you finish and I think Southend will strategically add players throughout and thus get stronger as the season progresses. I would be surprised if they are not challenging for honours at the top of the table and certainly would not back against them in a play off campaign.
